A pensioner in Lowestoft, Suffolk, has staged a one-man protest against workers attempting to install a 5G Mast on a patch of grass outside his home. Michael Garman, 69, insists that he owns the 130ft30ft plot and parked his motorhome and car on the grass verge to halt the work. Garman sat in a deckchair on the verge while neighbors brought him tea, causing the telecoms workers to temporarily stop their activity. The council is currently investigating the ownership of the land to resolve the dispute.

Mr. Garman claims that the land is his based on the information stated in his deeds. While the council adopted the land in 1966 for maintenance purposes, Garman argues that they do not have the right to dictate what happens on his property. Additionally, he expressed concern about the impact the mast would have on his home’s value, noting that it would be located next to his bedroom window.

According to a council spokesperson, the land is ownedSuffolk County Council. During the consultation stage of the planning application for the mast, local residents were informed and given the opportunity to provide feedback. However, no formal comments were received. The council maintains that the installation has the necessary approvals.

The installation of 5G infrastructure has faced opposition in various parts of the UK. While the technology is already available in 113 major cities and towns, residents and councils have raised concerns about its visual impact and potential health risks. For instance, in Salford’s Boothstown area, plans for a 50-foot mast near a primary school were rejected in April 2023 due to its aesthetic impact.
