Tape It, a startup foundedmusicians Thomas Walther and Jan Nash, has introduced an automatic, studio-quality Noise Reduction Algorithm poweredAI. The algorithm is designed to remove background noise from any audio, not just speech. Tape It started as an iOS recording app for musicians but has expanded its capabilities through the use of AI. The initial version of the app could automatically detect the instrument being played and annotate the recording for easier organization and reference. It gained popularity among musicians, garnering around 10,000 monthly active users.

Tape It’s latest development is an AI-powered denoiser that has been in the works for two years. The company aims to provide an affordable alternative to complex software used in recording studios to reduce environmental noise and electrical interference. The denoising software automatically removes noise such as hums and hisses from audio, producing studio-quality results for songs, single-instrument tracks, and field recordings. Tape It plans to present its work at the AES conference.

To verify the quality of its denoising software, Tape It will release an academic study with a scientific listening test. The study aims to demonstrate the software’s effectiveness in competing with industry-leading denoisers. Tape It’s technology involves connecting a neural network controller to a signal processing-based noise reduction algorithm, allowing for automatic denoising of general audio signals, including music.

The denoising software has attracted potential customers, including a large studio software vendor and a large hardware manufacturer. Tape It is considering different pricing options to accommodate the needs of various customers, with enterprise pricing available for larger companies and more affordable plans for smaller startups.

Tape It’s team of five is spread across Berlin, London, Los Angeles, and Stockholm. The company continues to bootstrap and is open to the possibility of raising funds in the future. According to Walther, the company opted for bootstrapping to maintain control over their research and ensure a technological advantage.

In addition to Tape It, other companies are also pursuing AI technologies for audio enhancement. Podcastle recently launched Magic Dust AI, a generative AI tool that eliminates background noise and enhances dynamic range for podcasters.
