Combine ancient and modern education systems: Dalai Lama

BENGALURU: A special study centre of IGNOU has been inaugurated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at Sera Jey Monastic University for Advanced Buddhist Studies and Practice, Bylakuppe. This learner support centre of IGNOU is established with a view to provide higher education facilities to monks and other aspirants in the vicinity of Sera Jey Monastery, Bylakuppe.
In his inaugural speech, Dalai Lama said that ancient and modern education systems can only guide the world for a better living. He also said that if we need a peaceful world, we should combine both and it is possible only in India as it has a rich culture and heritage.
The president of the Central Tibetan administration Dr Lobsang Sangay on Friday spoke about the importance of combining modern education with rich spiritual knowledge of ancient India to acquire an all-encompassing, holistic education.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of IGNOU’s special study centre at Sera Jey monastery. The function was attended by abbots and Geshes of various monasteries, members of Tibetan Parliament, settlement officers, the chief representative of southern Tibetan settlements along with local Tibetan public.
Khenpo Tenzin Choesang Rinpoche of Sera Jey Monastery gave the welcome remarks of the function. He thanked IGNOU for establishing the special study centre in the monastery to provide easy access to modern education for its resident monks and the local Tibetan public.
President Dr Lobsang Sangay, in his address, underlined hard work and dedication as the key to achieving success, and briefly narrated the struggles and effort of the older generation of the Tibetan people.
