Gujarat assembly polls 2017: Star candidates to watch out for

Results of Gujarat assembly polls, that took place in two phases on December 9 and 14, are due on Monday; here are some star candidates to watch out for:

BJP

Bhupenedarasinh Chudasama

A minister in the cabinet of Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, contested again from Dholka constituency; made first attempt in elections on a BJP ticket in the 1980 elections.

C K Raulji

Contested from Godhra constituency on BJP ticket after resigning from Congress this year. Won five times from Godhra constituency earlier.Won 2012 Gujarat assembly election on Congress ticket.

Dilip Thakor

A minister in the cabinet of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, contested second time from Chanasma Constituency. His first three electoral attempts were from the Sami constituency in 1995, 1998, 2002 and 2007.

Jaynarayan Vyas

Former health and family welfare minister of Gujarat, he contested from Sidhpur seat in north Gujarat. He was elected to the Assembly in 1990, 1995, 1998, and 2007, while losing in 2002 and 2012 Assembly elections.In 2012, he lost out to Congress candidate Balvantsinh Rajput

Nitin Patel

Deputy chief minister of Gujarat, contested from Mehsana Constituency; was first elected to the Gujarat assembly election in 1990 from the Kadi constituency and won subsequently in 1995 and 1998 too. After losing out in 2002, won in 2007. In 2012, contested from Mehsana only to win.

Congress

Alpesh Thakor

Leader of the OBC community in Gujarat, founded the Gujarat Kshatriya-Thakor Sena with an aim to get rid of the liquor addiction problems of the community; gained prominence after launching a movement to counter the Patidar reservation agitation by Hardik Patel.

Babu Mangokiya

Contested from Thakkarbapa Nagar in Ahmedabad; was counsel to PAAS leader Hardik Patel during the sedition trial.

Jignesh Mevani

A rising face in Gujarat politics, Mevani led the protest march called Dalit Asmita Yatra from Ahmedabad in response to attack on Dalit men by cow protection group; protest was attended by 20,000 Dalits
Kirit Patel

Congress fielded Dr Kirit Patel from Patan constituency. He is one of the conveners of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS).
Siddharth Patel

Patel, who was also campaign-in charge of Congress, contested from Dabhoi constituency. He had won the seat in 1998 and 2007.
