Class X English question paper riddled with errors

Jaipur: The district-level Examination in government schools in Jaipur gave a rude shock to students due to spelling and factual mistakes.

The Class X English Paper examination held on Monday reading portion had a passage on life sketch of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It termed Modi a “croad puller” instead of crowd puller. The passage described him as a “spoker” instead of a speaker while defining his characteristics. At one place lotus is typed as “lotoaus”. Deliberately has become ‘delibrately’ and violence read as ‘voilence.’ The question paper has made horrendous spelling mistakes in nouns ‘Gujrat’ instead of Gujarat and Gujrati instead of Gujarati. And guess what the question paper fail to put the Rathrapati Bhavan correct. It read as ‘Rastrapati Bhawan. The mistakes don’t end here. The comprehension part has sentences spread to 50-60 words.

Despite the errors which are visible the district education officials have termed it as ‘routine mistakes’ that are part of every question paper. Ram Ratan, district education officer-II Jaipur has refused to admit it as big mistakes.

“Is Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC), Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) and other examination bodies doesn’t make mistakes? If they can make such mistakes, we are just a district level body. It’s ok,” said Ratan, while justifying the mistakes.

He has yet to examine the nature of mistakes even after 24 hours have passed to the exam. “We have a committee which evaluates mistakes in question paper. They look into the question paper after the examination and red line mistakes. In case of any mistake, the committee decides that the mistake is either by the teacher or the printing agency,” said Ratan. He refused to share the details of the committee members citing that the committee is confidential.

The rule says that question paper has to be prepared by the subject experts. An examination committee duty is to pick one question paper out of 3-5 on the basis of its level (questions and its language).

“In this can happen in Jaipur, we can imagine the situation in other districts,” said Kishan Mittal, secretary of Swayamsewi Shikshan Sanstnan, a body of private schools affiliated with state education department. Many private schools also take the exam as part of common examination. The half yearly exam has started on December 11.
