UP civic polls: AAP alleges misuse of EVMs by BJP

LUCKNOW: Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday questioned BJP’s sweep in local body elections, saying that it did well only in those areas where polling took place on EVMs. In places where voting happened through paper ballot, AAP said, Bjp Won less than 35% of the seats. It has asked the election commission for an enquiry into the alleged misuse of EVMs.

AAP, which contested its first civic elections in UP, saw two of its candidates winning as chairpersons of Nagar panchayats and 41 being elected as members of nagar palikas, parishads and panchayats. An independent who won as member also joined the party on Saturday, taking their tally to 42.

“Elections for mayor happened through EVMs where BJP won 14 out of 16 seats. In nagar panchayats where election was through ballot paper, BJP won 100 seats for chairpersons out of 447 and 662 out of the 5,390 results declared for nagar panchayat member. In the nagar palika parishad elections, where again voting happened through paper ballot, BJP won 68 seats for chairperson out of 195 and 914 member out of the 5,217 seats declared. How is this a sweep?” questioned AAP UP state convenor Sanjay Singh.

He added: “BJP is claiming that the result in UP reflects the sentiments of the country which has supposedly approved of GST and demonitisation. But when EVM frauds like those reported from Meerut and Kanpur have come forth, is this really the mood of the country?”
