A cow smuggling case had been registered against the three at Govindgarh police station after they were chased and shot at by robbers. Ummar had died in the attack.
Both Tahir and Javed were summoned for questioning by the police through Meo community leaders. After an approximately five-hour interrogation, police arrested Tahir and Javed on charges of cow smuggling under sections of the Rajasthan Bovine Animal (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 1995.
So far, the police team investigating the case had claimed that Tahir and Ummar were partners in the cow trade. “The driver of the vehicle, Javed, was paid Rs 15,000 to transport cows from one place to another, while the owners of the vehicles transporting the cows would have got Rs 10,000 each,” said a senior police officer with Govindgarh police station.
Police claimed that Ummar also possessed a firearm. “We are yet to recover Ummar’s firearm. It was also found that Javed was involved in two cases of cow smuggling and Tahir in five cases, including three of cow smuggling and two of assault,” said a senior police officer.
Asked about reports suggesting Tahir and Javed had double-crossed the deceased, Ummar, to steal the cows, Alwar SP Rahul Prakash told TOI, “Had that been the case, why would we arrest Bhagwan Singh and Ramveer Gujjar? The trio Tahir, Javed and Ummar was together and were attacked by Bhagwan Singh and aides. After the incident, Tahir and Javed fled since they knew that they were wanted by the police.”
The November 10 incident had come to the notice of police and local residents three days after it occurred. The post-mortem confirmed Ummar had died of gunshot wounds.
The Alwar police had claimed Ummar, Tahir and Javed had been illegally transporting cows when attacked by Bhagwan Singh, Ramveer and their gang.
