SMS med college set to improve research work quality

Jaipur: Being one of the biggest Medical colleges of northern India, the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College will improve quality of research work conducted in the hospital. For the purpose, two specialist doctors from Mumbai and Kolkata conducted a workshop at Sms Medical College on research methodology on Monday.

More than 8,000 patients come to SMS hospital every day for treatment at outpatient department. Also, a lot many get admitted to the hospital giving enough opportunities to teachers and students of medical college to conduct quality research work.

SMS Medical College has witnessed increase in number of researches done in the hospital. “In the past three years, there is an increase of 80% in number of publications. Every year, we are codncuting 700-800 researches. The basic aim behind organising the workshop is to imporve environment for research in the medical college,” said Dr US Agarwal, principal and controller, SMS Medical College.

Medical Council of India (MCI) too has stressed upon quality of research work. Now, MCI has implemented its publication norms for teachers in medical colleges strictly. The MCI has made it clear that research work conducted in medical colleges should be original research articles and original research papers.

MCI does not recognize teachers of different cadres, if they do not have the number of publications fixed by MCI for professors, associate professor and assistant professor.

Taking MCI’s publication norms seriously, SMS Medical College made it mandatory for all principal heads of the departments, PG coordinators and all the members of research review board to attend the workshop.

Medical teachers who attended the workshop pointed out that speakers talked about the latest research methodology so that researches will get a place in international journals having a good repute. “The focus is now on quality of research work. The MCI has strict norms for research works which needs to be followed in medical colleges,” said Dr Lokendra Sharma, MCI coordinator, SMS Medical College.

The workshop covered topics such as literature search, research design, ethics of research and plagiarism, bibliography and conflict of interest, statistical methods for dissertations, how and where to publish your research.
