Retired Army officer asked to prove Indian citizenship

NEW DELHI: A retired soldier has been accused of being an illegal immigrant by Assam Police.

Mohd Azmal Haque, who served in the Indian Army for 30 years and retired as a Junior Commissioned Officer, has been served a notice by a Foreigners’ Tribunal in the state, asking him to prove his citizenship.

Haque claims he was born in Kamrup district of Assam in 1968, and that his mother’s name features in the 1951 National Register of Citizens.

But Assam Police have alleged that he came to India illegally after 1971. The Assam Police notice has termed Haque a “doubtful voter,” Times Now has reported.

This is not the first time Haque has had to deal with Foreigners’ Tribunals. His wife, too, was accused of being an illegal immigrant in 2012, but was later found to be an Indian citizen.

“Many such Indian citizens are held as ‘foreigners’ for minor anomalies in their name and age in voter lists,” claims lawyer Aman Wadud, who will appear for Haque during his trial.

In a video tweeted by Wadud, Haque says that he is very disappointed and has “cried alot” at the treatment being meted out to him.

Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay has promised to look into “why the notice was served,” news agency ANI reported.

In the meanwhile, the Indian Army’s Eastern Command is in contact with the soldier and has promised “necessary assistance” till the resolution of the issue.

Assam Police are yet to release a statement.
