Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Metro Boomin, and hundreds other Musicians demand AI companies stop using their music

More than 200 high-profile musicians, including Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Metro Boomin and Pearl Jam, said in an open letter from the Artists Rights Union that they are using artists’ Music to teach Artificial Intelligence.

The union has called on AI companies to stop doing this. Use without permission The letter, also signed by Stevie Wonder, Kacey Musgraves, Katy Perry and Imagine Dragons, highlights the potential threat posed by the irresponsible use of artificial intelligence.

The letter explains that if used irresponsibly, AI poses a serious threat to privacy, identity, music and livelihoods. The artists also claim that some of the most famous and powerful companies are using their work to train AI models without their permission.

“When AI is used irresponsibly, it threatens our ability to protect our privacy, our identity, our music and our lives,” the letter said. “Some of the largest and most powerful companies use our work to train AI models without our permission. … For many working musicians, artists and songwriters who are just trying to make a living, this is a devastating situation.” This would be a serious situation. ”

AI models generate new music, graphics, and text features by training large datasets of existing works, often including artists’ original songs, vocals, and lyrics.

The Music Makers Association calls to account AI companies and technology platforms that use AI-powered music production technology or content that undermines or replaces the human artistry of songwriters and artists, or denies them fair compensation for their work.

The letter recognizes that artificial intelligence, when used responsibly, has the potential to enhance human creativity. However, we take a similar position to other industry players, including major record labels. Universal Music CEO Lucian Grainge has raised concerns about licensing issues and the possibility that AI content could overwhelm an already saturated music market.

As the debate over the use of artificial intelligence in the music industry continues, lawmakers are currently debating laws to protect artists’ works and likenesses. In March, Tennessee passed the ELVIS Act, updating the state’s civil rights law. The purpose of this law is to protect artists from deep fraud through artificial intelligence and voice simulation.

Some companies like YouTube are working with record labels to introduce experimental AI features that generate songs with simulated vocals from popular artists. But Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company that developed the cloud chatbot, is facing a lawsuit from UMG and several music publishers for allegedly infringing on copyrighted song lyrics.
