WhatsApp to Get a New Feature to Set All Media Uploads to HD Quality: Report

WhatsApp for Android is reportedly getting a new feature that will make sending high-quality images and videos easier than before. The new feature aims to add a settings option that allows users to choose whether to send Media in HD or standard quality. Once selected, the app will automatically use this Setting for all future media uploads. Notably, WhatsApp recently introduced a feature that allows users to pin up to three messages in private and group chats.

This new feature was discovered by WABetaInfo’s WhatsApp update tracker in WhatsApp Android Beta Build 2.24.7.17. The Android beta was released to testers on Monday through the Google Play Beta program. Apparently, the new update will allow users to adjust the quality of image and video upload directly from Settings, eliminating the need to repeat the process every time they upload new media.

The screenshot shared in the report shows the new settings options in the Storage & Data menu. This new settings option is apparently called “Media Upload Quality” and includes two options: Standard Quality and HD Quality. Once the user selects an option, subsequent uploads will follow that setting.

The messaging platform introduced HD photo sharing in August 2023 and added support for high-resolution videos shortly after. However, currently users have to manually select whether they want to send their media in HD or standard quality every time they upload a photo or video. This granular control was useful for people who typically upload standard files and only occasionally share HD images and videos. However, for those who want to stick with both options, this is an unnecessary step.

Apparently the next WhatsApp update will fix this problem. The screen preview option to change quality is reportedly still available, but is now set to the selected setting in Settings. The feature is reported for Android, but not yet confirmed for iOS or the desktop app. Please note that current options do not allow users to send media in their original resolution, especially for large files. To do this, the user must share it as a document.
