At 21.40 cm in diameter, the Discraft Sting is pretty standard in size. It feels comfortable in hand and easy to grip for most disc golf players.

The 1.80 cm height gives the Sting a low-profile design, allowing you to have a firm grip and control over the disc, especially when making precision throws.

The rim depth of 1.20 cm is the route to the disc’s forgiving nature, making it easier to release smoothly. It’s deep enough to get a good grip but not too deep to hinder a clean release.

The rim width of 1.60 cm hits that sweet spot between speed and control, meaning the Sting offers a balanced and well-rounded performance in both aspects. It’s a nice width for giving power throwers enough control and providing slower-paced throwers with decent speed.

Compared to similar discs, the Sting offers a balanced hand feel. Team Discraft said that their goal was to: “. . . create a disc easy to control, holds an almost perfect line on all throws, and fits comfortably in most hands.” I can attest to the fact that the Sting achieved this goal.

Can Any Player Throw The Sting?

The Discraft Sting is an understable fairway driver notable for its versatility. This disc is an excellent addition to the repertoire of both beginner and advanced players.

For newcomers to disc golf, this disc holds the potential to be a game-changer. Its stability means the Sting is easy to control. Even if you’re only starting to nail your backhand throw or consistently hit your desired targets, this disc gives you room to improve. It is a great disc to learn techniques such as anhyzer throws, hyzer flips, or even throwing backhand rollers.

The Sting remains a valuable asset as your skills develop due to its versatility. Its exceptional control makes it a solid option for intricate shot shaping, tunnel shots, and reliable, precise throws.

I would, however, caution power players or disc golfers with high arm speeds. The Discraft Sting tends to lean heavily towards a sharper rightward path when thrown with too much power. While this extreme turn could be helpful for specific shots, it does limit the disc’s appeal to these players as an all-round driver. I recommend going easy on power throws or finding more stable alternatives.

Disc Golf Versatility

The Discraft Sting shines in various play scenarios but excels as a utility disc in fairway plays. With its pronounced rightward drift and longer glide, it’s handy for controlled turnover shots, long anhyzers, and navigating around or over obstacles on wooded or tricky fairways.

The Sting is perfect for executing Hyzer flip shots due to its tremendous amount of glide, taking a Hyzer line and flipping up to a straight trajectory before subtly fading.

The Sting steps up to the plate when you need a disc to turn right and hold that curve (for RHBH throwers). It’s adept at following the anhyzer line and extending its glide.

Rollers

The Sting’s understable nature and forgiving rim depth make it a reliable option for backhand rollers.

Alternative Fairway Drivers

Innova Leopard

The Sting is often compared to the Leopard from Innova. Both discs share similar features—moderate speed, understability, and long glide. They each excel in controlled shots, emphasizing right turns (for RHBH players). However, the Sting arguably offers a slightly more pronounced turn and glide.

Axiom Rhythm

The Axiom Rhythm and Sting share a similar flight profile, designed for understable flights requiring less power. While I have not tested the Rhythm, from fellow disc golfer’s experiences, it appears to be a bit faster than the Sting.

DGA Vortex

The DGA Vortex, a prominent part of the Catrina Allen lineup, shares similar attributes to the Sting with its moderate Speed 7 and easy control. It is reputed for excellent glide and an ideal degree of turn, making it an appealing choice for both new and seasoned players.
