The Sector 9 Sandblaster is one of the best short carving longboards that Sector 9 produces but it is really not a very well known longboard. Recently a regular reader of the website brought this board to my attention and he could not stop raving about his experience on this longboard.

With that, this sector 9 sandblaster review was born. Sector 9 is known as a well respected longboard brand so I had high expectations for this short carver. Let’s see below if it lives up to them.

The Board

The Sector 9 Sandblaster has a total length of 40.75 inches and a width of 9.75”. Compared to similar boards( the Sector 9 Fractal and Shoots are two very popular alternatives), the deck length is 2 inches shorter.

The width of the board, however, more than makes up for the shorter deck. If you are worried about foot placement, the deck is wide enough for any foot arrangement that you can see fit.

The primarily advantage of construction like this, a short and wide deck, is that it aids the board greatly in carving. The longer width allows riders to put more pressure on the edges resulting in faster turns.

The trucks are mounted in a drop through design which lowers the deck height from the road. For people who simply want to cruise around, this is a good thing as it will make this board easy to push.

The trucks on the Sandblaster are Gullwing Sidewinders. Written about in detail in our guide to the best longboard trucks, the Gullwing Sidewinders are placed on longboards specifically as carving truck.

It’s even in the name, the Sidewinder. These trucks allow longboards to make smooth carves while commuting or racing down hills.

One aspect of the Sector 9 Sandblaster that prospective buyers should look out for is that the Gullwing Sidewinders are perhaps the only trucks that will work with the Sandblaster deck shape.

As the deck does not have big wheel cutouts, most if not all other trucks will cause wheel bite, which is when the wheels hit the deck of the longboard.

For beginners reading this, there is no reason you should need to change the trucks. The Gullwing Sidewinders are the best choice for the Sector 9 Sandblaster.

For wheels, the longboard comes with standard Sector 9 70mm 78A longboard wheels. These wheels are very high quality and will serve all of your needs.

However, if you do want to upgrade, the Sector 9 69mm Race Formula wheels. These wheels have enough grip to last forever and will help during hard carving maneuvers.

One aspect of this longboard that I have not gone over yet is the flipped up nose and tail. Sector 9 subtly raised the height of the ends of the board in order to make manuals, shove-its, and other skateboarding tricks easier to pull on this board.

Riding the Sector 9 Sandblaster

From the board construction and the included components, it was clear from the onset that the Sandblaster is primarily a carving and cruising board. Putting my feet on the deck of this board, I was impressed with the slight flex that really made standing on the deck feel comfortable and familiar.

As said above, the drop through construction really improves the stability of the longboard and makes it easier to push it for long distances. After pushing a ¼ mile on a Loaded Vanguard and then again on this board I was astounded at the difference in easiness.

For carving, the slightest shift of my weight would allow the deck to dip down fully and go into a smooth carve. The transitions from one carve to another were seamless.

I could easily see how other trucks would cause wheel bite nearly instantly. This longboard has such a low turning radius that other trucks simply can’t keep up with.

Besides turning smoothly, the Sector 9 Sandblaster also holds itself well when going fast. The drop through configuration gives stability to the board and prevents premature speed wobbles from breaking out, as is common on carving boards.

Who should buy the Sector 9 Sandblaster?

This longboard is primarily for riders looking for a really good carving and cruising longboard and ones that aren’t afraid to drop some money on a quality board. The Sector 9 Sandblaster is expensive but you do pay for higher quality with Sector 9.

If you see the price and instantly say “OMG”, I would strongly suggest either the Sector 9 Fractal or the Sector 9 Shoots. Both of those boards are cheaper and can do much the same things that the Sandblaster excels at. The Sector 9 Shoots especially is a short board just like the Sandblaster and is also a carving machine.
