Best Longboard Brands of 2018

When buying a new Longboard it’s almost as important if not more so, to consider the brand name as well as the longboard. Different brand names are known for being excellent at different aspects of longboarding. In addition, knowing the history of each of the longboard brands can be incredibly interesting. It can remind riders how much development has gone into the board beneath their feet. See below for our selection of the top longboard brands.

Best Longboard Brands – Sector 9

When somebody thinks of great quality Longboards, it is highly likely they are referring to Sector 9 boards. Their consistent dedication to excellence and customer service has made them among the top if not number one out of all the longboard brands.

Started in 1993 in La Jolla, California, Sector 9 has had many years to perfect the art of creating a longboard. From La Jolla, they moved to San Diego where their headquarters remains today.

Sector 9 prides itself on producing high-quality equipment in every aspect of the longboarding market and in that they definitely succeed. Sector 9 produces a large variety of boards of all types and all necessary accessories for more advanced riding such as Sector 9 slide gloves or Sector 9 Speed suits.

One primary way that Sector 9 promotes its brand is by sponsoring top longboarders and giving them free Sector 9 gear. A major competition that they help sponsor is called Maryhill which is a very popular longboard race.

This video shows off the Sector 9 boards and speed suits that each rider wears. Sector 9 sponsors these riders to help promote their brand as a whole.

Sector 9 is one of the most massive and top longboard brands today. Although they produce a wide variety of products for every rider from beginner to advanced, Sector 9 has a few top products that stand out from the rest. The Sector 9 Lookout has been one of their top sellers for years and it’s easy to see why. While Review Longboards wrote an extensive review on this board, the Sector 9 Lookout has an excellent balance between downhill and carving abilities. Other best sellers include the Sector 9 Fractal and the Sector 9 Sidewinder.

Landyachtz

One of the most popular Landyachtz boards: the Landyachtz Switch

Landyachtz is another top longboard brand up there with Sector 9 and Loaded Boards. This company was founded on the north shore of Vancouver in 1997.

The founders, Michael Perreten and Thomas Edstrand, grew up as avid skateboarders. Surrounded by steep hills, however, they discovered over the years that skateboarding just wasn’t as fun anymore.

After one of the founders visited California and saw longboards there, he brought the idea back and immediately started to create his own board.

Through trial and error, the founders quickly developed a board and knew they were onto something. A short while later, they formed a company named Landyachtz. Starting from scratch, Landyachtz was the first to experiment with lowered boards with trucks above the foot platform which led to the popular drop down longboard which has many advantages over other longboard designs.

Known for their large variety and unique designs, Landyachtz primarily produces slightly more expensive boards but their quality more than makes up for it. One of their most popular boards is the Landyachtz Switch 40” which is known for its drop down and symmetrical design. A slightly more advanced board, this design lets the Landyachtz Switch make sharp turns and tear up down hills which makes it extremely popular among beginner-intermediate riders.

Loaded Longboards

The hugely popular Loaded Vanguard 3 is known for it’s carving and flexibility.

Loaded Boards was founded in 2002 in Culver City, California. The Loaded brand premiered with the Loaded Vanguard as their first product and it continues to be a best-seller today.

Among other top longboard brands, this company quickly stood out from the competition with their flexible bamboo decks and unparalleled carving ability. Loaded boards are especially known for merging environmentally friendly materials and practices and high-performance boards together to create boards that look and feel beautiful underneath riders feet.

Unlike other longboard brands such as Sector 9 which produce everything longboard related, Loaded primarily produces longboard decks. They do, however, have an offshoot brand which originated under Loaded called Orangatang. Orangatang focuses on creating high-quality wheels to pair together with Loaded Decks.

The video below shows the true flexibility of Loaded Boards. Although these are experienced riders on the Loaded Dervish Sama longboard, beginners often choose Loaded Boards for their excellent carving and sliding ability.

While only recently founded, Loaded has quickly risen to become one of the top longboard brands out there today. Their first product released, the Loaded Vanguard, remains a best seller today. Other top products of theirs include the Loaded Tan Tien (very popular for beginners) and the Loaded Dervish.

Arbor Axis Longboards (Arbor Collective)

While not the most well-known longboard brand, Arbor Collective produces the line of Arbor Axis longboards which are excellent boards for the price. The name, Arbor, isn’t merely for show: as a whole, Arbor Axis longboards donates a portion of every product to groups that protect forests and promote sustainability.

Initially, however, Arbor Collective was started in 1995 as a snowboard company. As longboards starting to become more popular, the owners took their snowboard experience and used it to create a new line of longboards able to move down hills just like snowboards across the snow. This snowboard influence created a line of longboards perfect for blending together cruising, tricks, and downhill.

A bestseller for years, the Arbor Shakedown Koa longboard is the perfect longboard for picking up serious speed across all kinds of terrain.

For riders who prefer a good all around board, the Arbor Axis Walnut longboard is among the most popular of all of Arbor’s longboards. The Arbor Axis Walnut features a flexible deck and trucks made for carving making it an excellent board.

Atom Longboards

The best seller, Atom Drop Through, is known to be a high-quality beginner longboard.

Atom Longboards is another top longboard brand and well-known company in the market. Atom Longboards was launched relatively recently in 2005 with the sole mission to make more affordable boards for beginner riders. While on this mission, they refused to sacrifice high quality for a low price and ended up with a great line of boards that are perfect for beginners.

With these core values and a wide array of longboards with different designs, riders are sure to find a great longboard at the price they want with Atom Longboards.

Among their bestsellers, the Atom Longboard Bamboo Drop Through remains number 1 with its mixture of carving, sliding, and downhill proving to be perfect for riders looking for an all-around board. Also standing out from the broad longboard offerings is the Atom Pintail showcasing its different board design with its excellent carves.

Globe Longboards

Beginning in the 1980’s, this Australian based longboard brand has quickly come out with some great longboards that have taken the market by storm. And Globe didn’t stop with just longboards. They quickly expanded into skateboards and apparel markets and distinguished themselves with quality and their distinctive brand.

One of their most popular longboards is the Globe Geminon Drop down longboard which was also recently reviewed. This longboard has a mixture of stability and speed that makes it perfect for riders of all types. With their emphasis on beautiful design, riders will look good while cruising on this board also.

Globe also makes a variant of the hugely popular Penny Boards called the Globe HG Bantam. These boards are designed to be used only for commuting and can range in quality. While Penny Boards can go for over $100, the Globe HG Bantam is cheap and one of the highest quality penny boards on the market.

Yocaher Skateboards

Yocaher Skateboards was first established in 1975 and as the name suggests initially made skateboards. Based as they were in Chino, CA, they were in prime position to see the longboard come to prominence on the west coast and soon sweep the country.

Planning their expansion into this market, Yocaher developed their longboard brand using their flagship, Yocaher Drop Through Longboard, which quickly rose to become a top rated beginner board with its cheap price and riding quality.

From this success, they developed a whole line of longboards targeted towards novice riders. Now, their boards are still top rated, low priced (see some of them on our cheap longboards list!), and any beginner riders should think about trying them out.
