PULAU SEMBILAN, PERAK – 25 JAN 2016

Love is one of the most profound emotions known to human beings. There are many kinds of love, but most people seek its expression in a romantic relationship with a compatible partner. For some, romantic relationships are the most meaningful element in their lives, providing a source of deep fulfillment. This is not Psychology, you are still reading the right content from Fishyology :). We’ve seen movies and heard stories of people who travel half way across the globe and most of them would gain great experience, knowledge and even love. To listen how this two love birds met was just like in the movies. So sweet.

It all dated back I think weeks before this trip started, Najla were planning to take her boyfriend to experience some fishing over Jarak Island. After evaluating the level of fishing competency, I think it will be better if we just fish around Pulau Sembilan, Perak. The scenery was beautiful and good fishing spot too. I think it fits for someone who is visiting from abroad to get to know a bit about what Malaysia has to offer. I picked them up in Ipoh, and drive off to Manjung, Perak to stay one night before the fishing trip. Najla did a good job in Malaysianizing Harley as it was easy to arrange the F&B as he loves local Malaysian food. We had an early dinner, and head to one of the homestay to rest and prepare for Harley and Najla first fishing experience.

We start as early as 7.30 in the morning to head off to Pulau Sembilan :). Scenery at the jetty

Usually, I would go to Pulau Sembilan with Rafi but unfortunately Rafi had to return to his hometown. He hooked me up with Rosli and the first time I laid my eyes on his boat I was extremely satisfied. It was spacious, clean and proper. I think it can fit up to 6 easily without any issue. It was ample space for 3 of us and I am glad it worked out pretty well for both of my client.

No time to waste, we blast off across me Manjung Power Plant and set course to Pulau Sembilan. The weather was very calm, and it took us 30 minutes to reach our first spot and begin our jigging session. At first, it was a bit awkward for both of them to get used to the concept of jigging metal bait. The usual idea was to get a hook and bait at the bottom of the sea. After several drops and casts, they were in zone, focusing 100 person. Najla were really focus on her fishing while Harley got distracted once a while because of the Eagles that are known to nest around Pulau Sembilan. For an avid bird watcher, and a photographer, it is hard to resist snapping a few shots of Eagle gracefully flying above the tree line and lighthouse tower.

A big boat for 4 haha. But it was spacious, clean and well equipped boat.

Getting used to jigging takes time, especially when it comes to finding the right movement or synchronizing the lift of the rod and reeling the line. We continue on visiting some of the 9 islands in our bid to land the first fish during the morning session. We’ve tried fishing along the edge of the island, casting small jigs hoping for a GT or Scads to take the metal bait. It was fruitless few hours of our morning session, but we push on to Pulau Batu Puteh.

White rock formation, placed outside from the 9 Islands and served as a lighthouse station to navigate containers in one of the busiest straits in the world. It is home to the Giant Scads but they are no where to be seen. Several Scads followed Harvey’s metal bait but intimidated to take it.

Pulau Batu Putih, a prominent Island of Pulau Sembilan, home to the Giant Scad and Juvenile GT!

After several drifts in Pulau Batu Puting and Pulau Batu Hitam, we decided to head back closer to Pulau Lalang for our final jigging spot before we take our lunch break. The captain’s finally break the deadlock with a nice Queenfish landed to his name. It was an average size Talang that put a smile in everyone’s face. Harley has his own moment at this spot but it was a quick touch and go as the Queenfish were not hooked properly. The sun is dead straight on our head and we decided to have our lunch break and rest until the sun ease off a bit.Pulau Lalang is now famous for tourist stopover from Pulau Pangkor or Bagan Datoh. A camping place for family or simply enjoy the intense tropical sunlight haha which will burn you in minutes. Only our boat and the Island management were on that Island. We disembark, had our lunch and lay back at one of the hammock while enjoying cold Chinese New Year mandarin oranges. That definitely hit the spot

Harley, posing with the captain’s Queenfish. The and only fish for the morning session.

A view from our dining table.. awesome

Another view from the dining table, we can see barracuda hitting baitfish in the distance.. a very beautiful place but unknown to the society

We continue on, after 3.00pm but the fish were not in the mood for some action with us. We also came across of what could have been a black marlin. The captain is crazy enough to have a go, but the Black Marlin swims off. We leave the main island and dash to Pulau Batu Putih. It was getting really really late and this might be skunked day for us. It is not fair after Najla and Harley worked so hard to have a taste of fighting a fish with rod and line. Deep down I think they knew that they are not gonna catch anything, but great things will always come to those who worked hard.

Najla’s metal bait finally have got the attention of what could have been a Giant Scad. It swims fast and able to dash deep underwater. Najla has it all under controlled and finally landed her first ever fish! How cool is that? hahaha. The general rules applies that only after a noob catch a fish then the regulars may catch on haha. Harley soon landed his own Scad and have intense moment with a huge Talang! He fought gallantly but it was not meant to be.. The fish were able to ditch the hook after putting an amazing acrobatic jumps.

Satisfied!

She has been trying hard all day and finally she landed one! Hooked for life!

Awesome sweet couple! Thank you and hopefully we will meet again! Adios Pulau Sembilan!
