Louisville Metro PD Gives Update on Scottie Scheffler Arrest at PGA Championship

On Thursday, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel gave an update on Scottie Scheffler’s arrest last week at the PGA Championship and new developments in the internal investigation of the situation.

Mayor Greenberg first recognized the death of Mr. John Mills, who was struck by a shuttle bus and killed. However, he then said that there is no video footage of the “initial interaction” between officers and Scheffler. There are some videos of the arrest, one of which came from a stationary camera near the area of the incident.

The videos are being released after the press conference concludes.

Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel commented on the lack of use of body-worn cameras during the event:

“Detective Gillis should have turned on his body-worn camera but did not. His failure to do so is a violation of LMPD Policy on uniforms and equipment, subject category – Body Worn Camera…Detective Gillis did not have his bodyworn camera operationally ready as required by our policy. He was performing a law enforcement action as defined in our policy.”

Chief Gwinn-Villaroel said Detective Gillis was “counseled” by superiors and disciplined.

Additionally, he was required to fill out a “failure to activate” form, which was released by the Metro PD. He has received “corrective action” for the policy violation, which has been noted on a performance observation form and is in line with its processes.

The LMPD said it would allow the courts to proceed accordingly, and would have no additional comment at this time.
