Louisville Metro PD Could Be In Hot Water Over Scottie Scheffler Arrest: Report

The Louisville Metro Police Department will perform an internal investigation to determine whether the officers who arrested World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler followed protocol when handling the incident, a new report states.

Scheffler was arrested last Friday while driving into Valhalla Golf Club to prepare for his morning tee time ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship.

In what Scheffler called “a big misunderstanding,” an officer was reportedly dragged by the golfer’s vehicle when he attempted to enter the venue to prepare for his second round. He was detained and arrested and charged with four different counts, including one felony.

However, there is no body camera footage of the incident and no evidence of Scheffler’s potential crimes other than the claims of the arresting officer. Therefore, the LMPD is opening an internal investigation.

LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said in a statement on Tuesday:

“The internal investigation is still ongoing. Any policy violations that are revealed through the course of the investigation will be appropriately addressed according to LMPD’s disciplinary protocol.”

There should be another update on the situation tomorrow, she added, according to the Courier-Journal.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said there is confusion about why the officer’s body camera was not turned on during the arrest. It is now a department policy that all officers are required to activate their body-worn cameras before the start of any and all law enforcement encounters.

This makes things difficult for the department, which is attempting to avoid controversy as it works toward resolving the entire situation. Scheffler was released and made his tee time, which was scheduled for 10:08 a.m. on Friday. He arrived on the grounds of Valhalla Golf Club less than an hour before teeing off.

Scheffler’s arraignment was delayed earlier this week and is now scheduled for June 3.
