Golf’s longest day is coming up on June 3. That’s when 10 U.S. Open Final Qualifying tournaments will be held.
But three got underway a bit earlier, with some big names involved.
At a qualifier at Dallas Athletic Club in Texas, Sergio Garcia was the odd man out in a seven-way playoff for six spots.

Garcia, who still has hope to reach his 25th straight U.S. Open, had a double bogey on the 16th hole, which served as the 34th of the 36-hole tournament. That put him into a seven-way tie for sixth place.
Six of the golfers would advance to the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2. But with Garcia being the only one of the seven to bogey the playoff hole, he’s left as a first alternate.

Garcia saw his major streak, which dated back to the 20th century, snapped last year after he failed to stay high enough in the Official World Golf Ranking due to playing for LIV Golf.
It’s not as long of a streak as Garcia’s, but fellow LIV Golf member Patrick Reed withdrew from qualifying and will miss his first major in over a decade since starting his run at the 2014 Masters. Reed needed a top-5 finish at last week’s PGA Championship to move high enough into the OWGR to be exempt from the U.S. Open, but he placed 53rd at Valhalla.
Here are some notable golfers who qualified for the U.S. Open in tournaments on Monday.
- Francesco Molinari, the 2018 Open Championship winner.
- Eugenio Lopez Chacarra, a winner during LIV’s inaugural season in 2022.
- Ryo Ishikawa will be making his 25th start in a major and was fourth at the PGA Tour’s Zozo Championship in Japan last fall.
- Robert Rock, a former winner on the DP World Tour, who now runs a teaching academy. The world’s 2,035th-ranked golfer will be in his first U.S. Open since 2012.
