Back On the Map: Morgan Hoffmann in the Limelight on Korn Ferry Tour

Morgan Hoffmann is certainly a unique character in golf.

He was the next big thing during his time in college at Oklahoma State, ready to get his PGA Tour card and win some Majors.

He was also once the world’s top amateur, swinging the club at 120mph and cruising.

But health got in the way in the strangest possible fashion, and the story is well documented by Dan Rappaport with Golf Digest back in 2021.

Hoffmann was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.

The story is long, but Hoffmann was told by a group of doctors that playing golf at the professional level was no longer possible.

“It’s funny that people are so inclined to say, ‘alternative medicine,’ because it’s a really frustrating term,” Hoffmann says.

Frustrated with the limitations of western medicine, Hoffmann turned to psychedelics, breathwork and extreme techniques to fix hid body and mind.

If you think about the medicine that we say is medicine—seeing a doctor and getting prescribed a pill or a shot—that’s been around for only 100 years. ‘Alternative medicine’ has been around for 10,000 years. The people who started this healing knew how to educate themselves on plants and live off the land. They believe there is a plant to heal everything.”

Morgan went from traveling through Nepal to buying a home in Costa Rica in search of the ‘Blue Zones’ where life expectancy is much higher than other parts of the world. He stayed there for several years, throughout the pandemic, and then Hoffmann returned to the PGA TOUR in 2022, starting out with meagre performances and missing several cuts.

The story had been much the same in five Korn Ferry Tour starts this season, poor putting leading to more missed cuts.

Armed with a new putter this week, and having put a new set of irons in the bag three weeks ago, Hoffmann made it to -13 through two rounds and at one point was one off the lead at the LECOM Suncoast Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Quite the turnaround!

To assist with the healing of others, he launched the Morgan Hoffmann Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for muscular dystrophy and improving the physical and mental wellness of those in the fight against neuromuscular diseases.

Hoffmann was the recipient of the 2020 PGA TOUR Courage Award. He has an amazing amateur career, a pilot’s license, a healing body, a home in Jupiter, FL as well as a hut in Costa Rica, and an incredible story.
