Peter Malnati Says Fans Are Sick of Money Talk As His Win Highlights What Golf is Truly About

Peter Malnati’s triumph at the Valspar Championship this past weekend may have given fans a refresher on what the sport of Golf is truly about.

Over the past few years, the narrative of golf media has fixated on money, contracts, LIV Golf and PGA Tour drama, and loyalty. It has become less and less about what golf is truly about: triumph and the fact that anyone can win any tournament.

Malnati overcame some big names in golf to win this past weekend, and his victory was a refreshing time for golf, he said in a press conference:

“I think people are just sick of the narrative in golf being about contracts on LIV, purses on the Tour, guaranteed comp on the Tour. I think people are so sick of that…No kid dreamed, when they were watching Jordan, of having his salary, they didn’t care about that. They dreamed of being in that moment, hitting that shot. I think that’s what our fans care about too and that’s what they want to see.”

It has gotten to a point that every morning, people are checking headlines, waiting for the next development in the PGA Tour–LIV Golf saga, or they are waiting to hear controversial thoughts on money.

Indeed, it has become a tiresome and monotonous topic. Malnati’s win may have reignited old perspectives on what golf truly stands for.

It’s always nice to see the underdog come through.
