Zach Johnson Explains Why He Didn’t Pick Bryson DeChambeau for the Ryder Cup

Brooks Koepka is on Team USA for this week’s Ryder Cup—the lone representative of LIV Golf on the 12-man team and in the entire 24-golfer field.

Koepka nearly automatically qualified for the team due to his PGA Championship victory and runner-up finish at the Masters. But he’s struggled as of late on the LIV circuit.

The same cannot be said for Bryson DeChambeau…

Before the USA captain’s picks were selected by Zach Johnson, DeChambeau was coming off a 58 in the final round of his win at The Greenbrier, and DeChambeau took home his second LIV win in three starts this past weekend in the Chicago area.

DeChambeau said he believes he was never in consideration for a spot on the team, given that he didn’t receive a call from Johnson throughout the process.

Johnson said that it all came down to the official points when determining his six picks for the squad.

“We kept a tally of — we have a points system within The PGA of America, within the Ryder Cup USA. It’s pretty evident that of how you garner points and which tournaments can accumulate points,” Johnson said Monday in Italy, home of this week’s Ryder Cup.

“I mean, I have my own probably a top 30 but when it got down towards the end of the process, it was the top 20, the top 25 guys in that point system that I felt like had the merit and certainly, well, should have my full attention.

“That’s where I was. I was basically in the top 20, top 25 guys in points when it came down to formulating this Team USA.”

Even though he hasn’t been in solid form as of late, Dustin Johnson is also absent from this team after going 5-0-0 in the 2021 edition of the event.

The United States team is a very slight favorite going into the three-day contest, which starts Friday at Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome.
