TECH: TrackMan Launching New iO Launch Monitor

TrackMan has become the gold standard for Launch monitors. Watch the pre-round range at any professional event, and you’re sure to spot the unmistakable orange, Trackman 4s behind countless golfers vying for the win.

So it’s crazy to think that TrackMan 4 was launched in 2015, and during that time, numerous competitors have released models that are looking to chip into TrackMan’s share of the launch monitor market. But it looks like TrackMan is ready to hit back.

As a radar launch monitor, TrackMan has struggled with indoor accuracy when compared to the top-tier camera systems. But the new iO looks to remedy that weakness.

TrackMan iO is the first purpose-built product for the indoor game, designed with one goal in mind: to create the ultimate indoor golf experience. Starting at $14,000, the iO features Optically Enhanced Radar Tracking (OERT) for state-of-the-art accuracy by combining radar with two cameras, including one high-speed (up to 4,600 fps) camera for club and ball tracking.

By combining TrackMan’s established radar technology with two cameras, TrackMan is able to release a launch monitor with no minimum space requirements—all that is required is enough room to swing a golf club. Additionally, the iO will not require any markers on the club or ball to capture the data.

Unlike the TrackMan 4, the iO is ceiling mounted, meaning you no longer have to worry about a clear line-of-sight between a rear-positioned radar launch monitor and the ball.

But like the TrackMan 4, the iO is already promising a litany of invaluable data points:

  • Club Data: Dynamic Loft, Face Angle, Impact Height, Impact Offset (Club Speed, Club Path, Face to Path are listed as “Coming Soon”)
  • Ball Data: Ball Speed, Launch Angle, Launch Direction, Spin Rate, Spin Axis, Hang Time, Height, Curve, Landing Angle, Carry, Side, Total, Side Total

The iO is still not as affordable as some of the alternatives from brands like SkyTrak, Rapsodo, or Bushnell/Foresight, but the TrackMan name comes with a tenured reputation and a history of very accurate data.
