Netflix’s ‘Full Swing’ Had A MAJOR Impact On Golf Viewership

We’ve been waiting a long time for someone to put together a great documentary on the life of a golfer. Netflix’s “Full Swing” finally gave Golf fans what they wanted: an inside look at what it takes to make it on Tour, what it takes to stay, the trials and tribulations of the professional ranks, and, more recently, what made golfers decide to leave the Tour and join LIV Golf.

The series evidently attracted more than just the average golf fan, according to new data compiled by Nielsen Media Research.

Their findings showed that, not only did those who had not tuned in to a PGA Tour event in the six months prior to the “Full Swing” debut finally watch live golf on TV, but over 40 percent of those people now watch golf more routinely than ever.

Nielsen’s findings showed:

  • 11 percent of ‘Full Swing’ viewers had not tuned into PGA Tour coverage in the six months leading up to the debut but tuned in after watching the show
  • 42 percent spend more time watching pro golf on TV after watching “Full Swing.”

We have all heard the all-too-common narrative on watching golf. “It’s boring.” “If I need to take a nap, I’ll throw some golf on my TV.” So on and so forth.

However, the depiction of the pro ranks that “Full Swing” put forward was one that can’t ever be argued as “boring.” Not only did the series draw people in with the unique relationship of best friends Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas gambling during a practice round at Southern Hills as their preparation for the PGA Championship continued, but it also contained various clips from the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which is inarguably the most incredible atmosphere in all of golf.

People who may not have had any idea about how far golf has come in the past decade, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, were likely shocked when they saw the Stadium Hole at TPC Scottsdale. Additionally, they may have been bamboozled when they saw how golfers are relatively normal people who tee it up for millions of dollars four days a week.
