Hideki Matsuyama Will Not Play 1st Event in Fedex Cup Playoffs

Tomorrow kicks off the Fedex Cup Playoffs at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. However, we will not see former Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama in the field this week.

Matsuyama has had to battle a series of nagging injuries that include his neck, wrist, and back. This time it is his neck, and Hideki felt it was better not to jeopardize the rest of his playoff run, considering his position in the Fedex Cup Points.

Hideki’s Thoughts

Matsuyama said in a statement:

“I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, but I felt it was the best decision to ensure my neck receives the treatment it needs for me to compete in the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.”

Overcoming Adversity

The 30-year-old will take this week off to prepare for the final two events of the season and FedEx Cup Playoffs. Despite the injury-plagued season of a handful of tournaments that Hideki didn’t play or withdrew during the event, he still notched off two wins to put at 11th in the Fedex Cup Points list. Even though this will set him back, he will secure a position in the second tournament of the playoffs even though he will be on the sidelines.

It’s no secret that he is an accomplished player with 8 PGA Tour Wins, including a green jacket, and has the tools to be able to make an excellent return next week in the BMW Championship.
