Fellow Players Detail Phil Mickelson’s Gambling Exploits On The Course In Book Excerpt

Last week, we wrote about an Excerpt published from the upcoming unauthorized biography on Phil Mickelson that’s turned the golfer’s life upside-down.

In that excerpt from “Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar” posted on The Fire Pit Collective by author Alan Shipnuck, it detailed an alleged $40 million in gambling losses from 2010-14.

Now, in another excerpt provided by Shipnuck to The Times of London, fellow golfers detail how obsessed “Lefty” was with gambling.

Golfer Steve Flesch was paired with Mickelson during an event and said that he was checking something that appeared to be a beeper.

Flesch said in the book:

“He could not have cared any less about what we were doing on the golf course. He was definitely more concerned about who was winning the football games and who was covering the spread.”

Tom Lehman detailed an incident from the Presidents Cup in 2000. He said Mickelson was playing poorly and walked into the woods after hitting into a bunker on the ninth hole.

Lehman said:

“I think he’s giving himself a pep talk, so I go over there to try to make him feel better and he’s got his phone out and he’s checking the football scores.”

Mickelson won last year’s PGA Championship but withdrew from this year’s event last week. Time will tell if we will see him defy the PGA Tour’s order and show up to play in the LIV Golf Investments’ first tournament on June 9 in London.
