Tiger Woods hasn’t played in a tournament since The Memorial a few weeks ago but he’s now ready to go when the PGA Championship kicks off at TPC Harding Park. And during a media appearance this week, Tiger eluded to the fact that he was going to be making some changes for the tournament this week. He didn’t provide any specifics at the time but Golf Digest Daniel Rapaport and Todd Lewis at The Golf Channel are reporting one of those changes revolves around Woods’ putter.

According to both men, Woods is set to take his trusty Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS putter out of the bag this week and replace it with a new Scotty Cameron Prototype. Woods has used the Newport 2 GSS to win 14 of his 15 major victories, which makes the decision to switch it up for a major championship appear quite odd. When you look at Woods’ performances this year, however, the change makes a lot of sense.

Ever since the start of the 2020 PGA TOUR season, Woods has had some tough appearances. He’s only appeared in The Memorial in the restart portion of the season and played pretty subpar, posting a negative gained figure that week due mostly to poor play on the greens. It was a similar story at the Genesis Open, the last event Tiger played before the season was put on halt, so putting has been a major problem.

It also doesn’t appear to be too much of a change for Tiger either, so he should be able to adapt quickly. He received the new Scotty Cameron prototype back at The Open Championship last season and has been practicing with it for almost a year now. The design is also quite similar to the Newport 2 GSS Tiger has used for years, this model just has adjustable weights that should help Woods better adjust to the speed of the greens.

Being that Tiger hasn’t played too much golf since the restart, this likely won’t be the only change that Tiger will have made for the PGA Championship this week. Hopefully, those changes will propel Tiger into the hunt for the title this week and help him claim his 16th career major win.
