COVERED: A Look for Every Occasion by Original Penguin

Original Penguin has recently become my go-to brand when I want lifestyle apparel that works on and off the Golf course. While there are lots of apparel companies out there, few companies offer products that are fun and lively,  without being outrageously expensive at a high quality. Traditionally, you’re forced to pick two of three factors—price, quality and looks—sacrificing one of the three.

Original Penguin was first conceived in 1955, designed to let you have your cake and eat it too. They provide golfers with a number of polos, pants, pullovers, and shorts. They all feature bold and exciting prints and patterns that will separate themselves from everything else in your closest.

Most recently, I had the opportunity to try out a little of everything: the Glen Plaid Golf Pant, the Easy Golf Short, the Hiking Print and 1955 Clubhouse Stripe Polos and the 50s Uniform Track Jacket.

Starting from the bottom, the Glen Plaid Golf Pant quickly became one of my favorites. They feature a light grey base color, the dark grey, pink, and blue. The colors breathe some life into these pants, making them a classy option that is easy to pair with a variety of apparel. Additionally, the lightweight and breathable fabric allows you to stay comfortably cool, even after you’ve run out cold beers.

One of the hardest parts in finding the right pair of pants is finding something comfortable and not restrictive that allows you to do activities like swinging a driver. I can assure you that the Glen Plaid Golf Pant don’t just look great, but they are also great to play in. The hem on the pants rests right on the top of my shoes (I can’t stand overly baggy or a hem that’s too high), and I was able to stretch and swing without worrying about splitting the seams.

In the event it’s too hot for pants, likewise to the pants, the Easy Golf Shorts are light and breathable to help keep you comfortable, cool, and dry in the summers heat and humidity.

Both the Glen Plaid Golf Pant and Easy Golf Shorts both feature an elastic gripper waistband that keeps your shirts tucked in (if the course you’re playing requires that kinda thing).

Now moving above the belt, the first polo I gave a test run was the Hiking Print Golf Polo. From afar, the unique blue stands out with the white accenting. However, up close you start to appreciate the novelty pattern that features miscellaneous objects like tents, axes, and backpacks.

To help make sure you stay comfortable, regardless if you’re hiking or golfing, the lightweight/moisture-wicking technology in the fabric keeps you cool and free from the shirt sticking to your body. In addition to the unique color, the reinforced placket and button-down color makes the shirt looking crisp and fresh.

The 1955 Clubhouse Stripe Golf Polo was a noticeable departure from the Hiking Print. Instead of vibrant colors and patterns, the 1955 Clubhouse Stripe is based around thick black block-stripes with progressively lighter color stripes. For the guy who likes solids and doesn’t like to dabble with colors or loud patterns, the 1955 Clubhouse Stripe Golf Polo strikes a perfect balance between subtle and bold

To wrap it up, the 50’s Uniform Golf Track Jacket turned out to be a jack-of-all trades. It easily could be worn on the course/at the driving range, on your way to work (or the simulator), and or out on the weekends. Despite the clean and modern zip-up appearance, the Track Jacket has plenty of stretch that allows a hinder-free swing, making it perfect to play a quick 9 and hitting the bar right after.

Additionally, the cuffs and raised collars made sure that the sleeves didn’t disrupt my grip and that my neck stayed warm, even when the wind kicked up. Perhaps the most brag worthy feature(s) are the 2 inside pockets (located right behind the exterior zipper pockets). They are perfectly sized and located to store your phone, glove, tees, some extra balls, and even a flask (perfect for those early spring and late fall rounds).

In light of the foregoing, I fully expect the 50’s Uniform Golf Track Jacket to become a go-to option once the weather stabilizes above 50°. I can see me in this jacket while I’m planning on hitting the range or a few holes, and even heading to work on a Monday morning.

Original Penguin is doing something unique and extremely versatile. While there are certainly some louder prints and patterns in their collection,  they find balance with the more reserved and conservative options. This collection is perfect for not only the statement maker, but also someone who is looking for something a little different, without announcing. Regardless of how you like to dress and where you’re heading, Original Penguin has quality product that’s 100% worth checking out.
