Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – 2018 Genesis Open

2018 Genesis Open Fantasy Sleeper Report

You wait an age for a journeyman to end their PGA TOUR title drought, and then two come along at once!

A week after Gary Woodland ended his near five-year wait to get his hands on some silverware at the Phoenix Open, Ted Potter Jr joined the club by landing his first win in six years at the AT&T Pebble Beach.

Their paths to success were rather different, and Potter must have been wondering if he would ever hit these heady heights again after injury and a lack of form meant he lost his main Tour card and had to go about things the hard way: regaining it via the Web.com Tour. Not just the preserve of hot young talents coming through, the Web.com Tour is a fantastic place for those who have lost their way to seek redemption.

A classy field will head to the Pacific Palisades this week and specifically the Riviera Country Club for the final leg of the West Coast swing. The Genesis Open has been around for more than 70 years, witnessing several name changes from the Los Angeles Open to the Northern Trust Open, and its longevity has been secured thanks to it being parked at this sublime golf course.

This is a tough test, and while Dustin Johnson’s winning score of -17 last year suggests otherwise it should be noted that the world number one was at his very best for all four days 12 months ago; the fact he won by five clear strokes speaks volumes.

At 7,322 yards for its Par 71, Riviera features just three Par 5s, so the players will have to compile the bulk of their winning score across the eleven Par 4s. And that’s no easy task: many of those dogleg left or right, meaning that the shot-shapers will have an advantage over those who simply boom the ball high, far and handsome. Riviera is summarily described as the thinking man’s golf course, and bit of experience with the layout – specifically the tricky pin positions – is a huge asset.

Consequently, it’s a slightly different assignment to the norm, and we can expect a fine week of golf as a result. But who are the sleepers to watch at the Genesis Open?
