Sheckler has two younger brothers, Kane and Shane. His father, Randy Sheckler, and mother, Gretchen Sheckler — who fully supported his passion, divorced in 2007. He attended Clemente High School and International High School LLC for his secondary education.

Early Life

Ryan Sheckler has had a knack for skateboarding since he was a kid; at just one and a half years old, he discovered his father’s skateboard. Sheckler spent countless hours mastering the sport with his father’s encouragement and complete support — his dad built a custom skate park in their backyard for him to practice. Sheckler managed to do a kickflip at the age of six, and at the age of seven, Sheckler was contacted by Etnies shoe company and Oakley, Inc.

Career

In 2003, at 13 years of age, Sheckler became the youngest gold medalist when he won the skateboard competition at the X Games, which took place in Los Angeles. That same year, Sheckler joined and was a foundational member of the skateboard company Almost, founded by professional skateboarders and entrepreneur Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song in 2003. Sheckler was the company’s main face in which he appeared in their inaugural Almost video Almost: Round Three. Part of the edited video of Sheckler appeared in The Cure song Why Can’t I Be You?

Among other competitions, Sheckler had won that same year, including Vans Triple Crown, Gravity Games, and the Slam City Jam. In 2010, he competed in the Skateboarding World Championships, and in the LG Sports Championship, he came first place.

Ryan Sheckler left Almost in 2007 and joined the Plan B Skateboards team; members consisted of other professional skateboarders: Pat Duffy, Danny Way, Brian Wenning, and PJ Ladd. Plan B Skateboards deck and apparel company became one of Sheckler’s main sponsors for the next 16 years. While at Plan B, Sheckler successfully cleared a 55 feet (17 m) gap. In 2007, Ryan Shackler starred in his own MTV reality TV series, Life of Ryan; it debuted on August 27, 2007. The series follows his everyday life as a professional skateboarder as well as his personal life — most of the episodes were filmed in his hometown, San Clemente — Sheckler’s two younger brothers and, alongside his childhood friends, also starred in the series. Sheckler called it quit after three seasons which ended in 2009; Sheckler later explained that the show was getting in the way of his career.

As of January 2022, Sheckler parted ways with Plan B, one of his main sponsors for 16 years.

Personal Life

On March 3, 2022, Sheckler married his girlfriend Abigail Baloun after their 90-day engagement who he had been dating for one and a half years.

Sheckler publicly stated that he loves his family above all else and that his main priority is ensuring the health and safety of his family, and he tries to spend time with them as much as possible. In 2017, Sheckler admitted he had been an alcoholic for a few years — realizing the addiction was jeopardizing his skateboarding career, he checked himself into rebab.

Real Estate and Cars

In 20o8, Sheckler purchased a gated community home in San Clemente for $1.7 million. He sold it for $1.55 million in 2015 and bought a new home in the same area for $2.5 million. The two-story house has four bedrooms, four bathrooms across 3,000 square feet, and plenty of other amenities, including a billiards room, hot tub, custom built-ins for skateboard storage, and dining cabana with an outdoor fireplace. In 2021, he sold the house for $3 million.

Ryan Sheckler owns several luxury cars, including a Ferrari F430, a custom Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and a Land Rover HSE.
