Business

Shailene is not only a Hollywood actress but also an advocate. And she’s using her platform to pursue her advocacy of protecting the environment. One of the ventures she signed on to was Karün, a sustainable eyewear brand established in 2012.

The brand uses recycled plastic materials to help reduce the impact of plastic use on the environment. In 2019, she personally traveled to Patagonia to meet with Karün founder Thomas Kimber. From there, her design collection was born.

Shailene’s Karün collection features 12 stylish glasses, each with their own unique design, all made with regenerated nylon, recycled metal, and recycled polycarbonate.

Foundation

Her career may not have fully bloomed till 2014, but Shailene has already been involved in foundations as early as 2010. Together with her mother, she co-founded the non-profit organization All It Takes.

This organization aims to help the youth get in touch better with their emotions, so they can make better, positive choices in their approach not only to other people but also to themselves.

Notable Career Achievements

In her junior year in high school, Shailene bagged the lead role in the TV show “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” The story revolved around a high school student who was driven and ambitious but suddenly got pregnant. With this unexpected twist in her life, she must quickly adapt and navigate her way from being a high school teen to a young mother.

The show was a hit and ran for a total of five seasons before finally wrapping up in 2013. By then, Shailene had been able to practice her acting consistently.

Lead Roles

The following year, she landed her breakout role in “Divergent” in 2014, which successive sequels would eventually follow up with “Insurgent” in 2015 and “Allegiant” in 2016. In this franchise, Shailene brought the character of Tris to life, a gifted teen who didn’t quite fit with the preset mold of their carefully constructed world and so became an odd hero of sorts.

Careful not to be limited to a stereotype, Shailene made sure to cast her net far and wide, accepting various roles in between the “Divergent” franchise installments.

One project that showed a completely different side of Shailene was the teen drama “The Fault in Our Stars,” which also came out in 2014. Here, she had no extraordinary powers but rather had terminal cancer.  She also featured in indie films like “The Spectacular Now” in 2013 and “White Bird in a Blizzard” in 2014.

By the end of the “Divergent” franchise, with the latest installment being “Allegiant,” it was clear that Shailene was ready to move up to more challenging, mature roles. In 2016, Woodley starred in “Snowden,” Edward Snowden’s biopic, where she played the role of Snowden’s girlfriend, Lindsay Mills, alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played the titular role.

Big Acting in Big Little Lies

Following her breakthrough roles in 2014, Shailene became more in demand with her TV appearances. She played the role of a sexual assault survivor in HBO’s “Big Little Lies” for two seasons, from 2017 to 2019, and shared the screen with an A-List ensemble cast including Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Nicole Kidman.

This earned her an Emmy, and Golden Globe Award nomination in 2017 for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, respectively.

Awards

Shailene has earned various Hollywood film awards for her acting, including Best Best Female Support, the MTV Trailblazer Award from the MTV Movie Awards, Favorite Action Movie Actress, Breakout Performance Actress, Breakthrough Performance, Rising Star Award, and more.

Fun Facts

Did you know that Shailene also starred in the hit TV show “The O.C.”? The hit TV show starred Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, and Adam Brody. It had a total of four seasons and ran from 2003 to 2007.

So, where does Shailene fit into all of this? Given the timeline, she must have been too young to be part of the main cast! That’s correct! But you will still find her as a recurring character in the show, particularly in the first season. Here, she played the role of Kaitlin Cooper, the little sister of Melissa, who Mischa Barton played.

She didn’t come back for another season after that, but Shailene would still refer to this part of her career as one of her proudest moments.
