Twitter Won The Fight To Protect The Identity Of An Anti-Trump Account

Twitter is generally terrible, something posterity will be forced to learn. But every now and then, the site does something more valuable than score some rando free chicken nuggets for a year, and in this case, it protected the identity of an anti-Trump account.

At issue was the exact identity of Twitter account Alt_USCIS, part of a wave of self-proclaimed rogue federal employees who were snarking Trump and supposedly offering an insider perspective on his administration. Customs and Border Protection issued a Summons demanding Twitter reveal the user, and Twitter sued to block the summons yesterday. Today, the government gave up, putting an end to the summons, which allowed Twitter to dismiss the suit. Likely helping matters was the fact that, bizarrely, the summons in question applies to merchandise, not people, which put the CBP in for a bit of a slow roasting on Twitter.

While Twitter has won a victory here, it’s unlikely to be the only skirmish between a Trump administration obsessed with leaks and the social media platform Trump loves. Trump seems out to punish those he feel have wronged him, whether they’re federal employees or not, and that urge is unlikely to go away with one mere loss.
