Some actors just seem like two peas in a pod – more than doppelgangers, with something downright chemical connecting them. That’s how Matthew Mcconaughey and Woody Harrelson are often viewed – and it’s thanks in no small part to McConaughey’s own mother and her fondness for humorous rumors.
McConaughey spoke on Tuesday’s episode of Access Daily about the popular belief that he and Harrelson are connected by blood as siblings. The Lincoln Lawyer actor was asked what his mother thinks about the rumor calling the two men half-brothers – only to reveal she’s fueled it!

McConaughey’s mother is former kindergarten teacher Mary Kathleen, nicknamed Kay, while his father is oil pipe businessman James Donald “Jim” McConaughey. Harrelson’s parents are secretary Diane and hitman Charles Voyde Harrelson. Although, many believe there is more to it than that and that Harrelson’s mother may actually be McConaughey’s.

“What does K-Mac have to say about this?” host Kit Hoover asked the Wedding Planner star. To this, McConaughey revealed, “She’s the one that started this whole thing!”
“We’re all sitting around in Greece one night talking,” he continued. “and my mom out of nowhere in a little pause goes, ‘Oh, I knew your dad, Woody.'” The subsequent silence was “filled with innuendo,” the actor said.
Kay is fine with muddying the waters and making waves
Naturally, those gathered wanted some clarifications. McConaughey continued, “And we all went, ‘What was the ellipsis about? And what was the knew about?’ And she goes, ‘Just saying, we might have frequented the same similar place out in West Texas one time when he was on furlough.'” While he was on furlough, McConaughey’s own parents were going through their second divorce, leaving the air charged with potential.
He further shared, “And we all went, ‘What? What, are you going to leave it there?’ Now we gotta go do some DNA tests.”
The rumor of their brotherhood is an old and popular one. Visually, Harrelson, , and McConaughey, , resemble one another so much that sometimes, McConaughey revealed, their families look at pictures of them and can’t tell the difference. But on a deeper level, they have been close friends for years. In fact, the chance to work with Harrelson was a significant factor in persuading McConaughey to take a prominent role in True Detective.
Harrelson, likewise, once told Stephen Colbert on an episode of The Late Show, “The year of [Matthew’s] birth, nine months before, she was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father, Jim.”
