Dolly Parton And Miley Cyrus Team Up For New Cover Of “Wrecking Ball”

Although long deemed the Queen of Country, Dolly Parton also broke into rock and roll, coming in like a wrecking ball as she transcended genres. In the spirit of this multi-talented discography, Parton is teaming up with Miley Cyrus for a powerful cover of Miley’s own “Wrecking Ball,” a new single that was released on Friday.

The original pop ballad “Wrecking Ball” was released in 2013 as part of Miley’s fourth studio album, Bangerz. Upon its debut, the song rocketed to number fifty on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Miley’s first number-one song on the chart. The subsequent music video caused those numbers to rise further. This cover is part of Parton’s upcoming album, Rockstar, and will be especially meaningful as it pairs up godmother and goddaughter.

“Wrecking Ball” is just one of many rock covers Parton is sharing with fans, both as singles and as tracks in Rockstar. This song, however, will be special as it’s not just Parton but Miley as well, making it technically not a complete cover. Miley has a very special part in backing Parton for the chorus.

Collaborating with other artists is actually a theme permeating much of Rockstar. For example, Beatles members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are right there with Parton to sing a reimagined version of “Let It Be.” Meanwhile, Debbie Harry features prominently in Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.”

Rockstar is Parton’s forty-ninth studio album and was first teased when Parton – initially reluctantly – was inducted into the Rock Roll Hall of Fame. Parton had been ready to reject the honor, feeling she did not belong among other established artists in the genre.

Ultimately, she did enter that prestigious list in 2022, and during her speech declared, “If I’m going to go in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I’m going to have to earn it.” Not long after, she confirmed she had a new album in the works.

In addition to original artists, Parton is also working with contemporary names too, such as Chris Stapleton for Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” and Lizzo for Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” The album is also expected to feature Pink.

Rockstar releases on November 17. Will you be listening?
