Jerry Seinfeld Teases ‘Seinfeld’ Return With Upcoming “Secret”

Fans of Seinfeld may have more content to enjoy, based on an auspicious comment made by series lead Jerry Seinfeld recently. In the annals of television finales, Seinfeld continues to hold its own, even with the polarized response it drew – but the show just might return, based on Jerry’s comments.

76.3 million televisions tuned in for the original broadcast of the Seinfeld finale, which aired on 1998 and was aptly titled “The Finale.” A 2010 Time magazine article reports that most viewers found the finale “downright awful,” and although co-creator Larry David said he had no regrets, Jerry assured that both he and Larry heard viewer feedback and have had time to think things over.

Jerry was performing standup at Boston’s Wang Theater over the weekend. On Saturday, the crowd asked him if he himself actually liked the ending to Seinfeld. In lieu of a straight answer, Jerry replied, “Well, I have a little secret for you about the ending, but I can’t really tell it because it is a secret.”

He continued, “Here’s what I’ll tell you, OK, but you can’t tell anybody. Something is going to happen that has to do with that ending – hasn’t happened yet.” To further cement just how serious this “secret” is, Jerry brought up the series co-creator, assuring, “And just what you are thinking about, Larry and I have also been thinking about it. So you’ll see, we’ll see.”

Even before this possible secret return, a ‘Seinfeld’ revisit has been in the cards

The complex nature of finales in general – and the Seinfeld finale specifically, has long been on Jerry and David’s mind, to the point he seems sure mixed reactions were a guaranteed thing.

“I think the thing about finales is everybody writes their own finale in their head,” David mused in a 2014 Grantland interview. “They go, ‘Oh, well this should happen to George, and Jerry and Elaine should get together,’ and all that. They’ve already written it, and often they’re disappointed because it’s not what they wrote. … I was not interested in an emotional ride, and neither was Jerry. No wonder why [people] would dislike it.”

2009 saw the introduction of a Seinfeld reunion, which according to Jerry had all the trappings of being a logistical nightmare, requiring them to secure the old cast and setpieces. They pulled it off, however, though that same 2010 Time article suggested that it “was viewed by many as his attempt at a do-over.”

Do you hope to see a do-over of the Seinfeld finale or a return and continuation of the show as a whole?
