Captain James T. Kirk is among the most popular characters in the Star Trek franchise, and several actors have played him over the past six decades, with William Shatner being the original, followed by Chris Pine in the big screen adventures Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016); and Paul Terry on the Paramount+ streaming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Kirk was a diligent leader, being the captain of the starship Enterprise as he and his crew explored alien worlds and overcame many dangerous encounters. Some bloopers of Kirk, which co-star Majel Barrett would play at conventions, featured the character walking into doors that were supposed to open automatically, but failed to do so because the timing of technicians was off.

Associate Producer Bob Justman compiled the bloopers

The Flickr photoset of the Star Trek bloopers featured several scenes that are dear to fans’ hearts. “The mistakes, pranks, parties, and repeat filming of individual scenes became legendary material from Star Trek due to the blooper reels,” the Flickr album description read.

The reels were compiled by associate Producer Bob Justman to be played at cast parties and season wrap-ups, but some fans got their hands on it “through sales from the Lincoln Enterprises” (the mail-order company that used to be run by series creator Gene Roddenberry and his wife, Barrett). “These shots are a combination of things that I identify as bloopers either from overt laughter, the original blooper reels, or out of character expression,” the text reads further.

The reels exist in various forms

Although the blooper reels — which not only features Shatner’s Kirk, but Leonard Nimoy’s Spock, DeForest Kelley’s McCoy and the rest of the cast — were never released for distribution, they are now in circulation via several different forms, ranging from 16mm film reels to Blu-ray discs.

The bloopers are also available on various YouTube channels, with thousands of views and several comments. “Shatner’s laugh is amazing,” a YouTube user commented on one of the Star Trek fan channels. “I just love the scene where William and Leonard see a rude thing on the screen they act just like little school boys because they saw something naughty,” another nostalgic fan added.
