In A World Of Hollywood Breakups, Harrison Ford And Calista Flockhart Defy The Odds

Breakups are as common as films in the world of Hollywood – and they famously can get very messy. It would be understandable if some fans are just too exhausted to root too hard for a couple, as surely the other shoe will drop. In this kind of relationship landscape, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart are an inspiring breath of fresh air.

What’s more remarkable is that they’re both in the industry – that’s like twice the amount of sabotage. Beginning his career in 1964, Harrison Ford went from minor roles to international acclaim as Han Solo in Star Wars (1977). Flockhart became a household name by playing the titular lead in Fox’s Ally McBeal from 1997 to 2002, before landing a starring role in Brothers & Sisters. She is also known for The Birdcage and Supergirl. So, what’s so special about these two stars sticking in each other’s orbit?

The date was January 20, 2002, and guests flocked to Beverly Hills’ Beverly Hilton Hotel to celebrate the 59th Golden Globe Awards. There, Calista Lockhart attended as a nominee for Best Television Actress – Musical/Comedy Series celebrating her performance in Ally McBeal. Sarah Jessica Parker took home that award thanks to her performance in HBO’s Sex and the City, but the event still set her up to cross paths with Ford. Flockhart was nervous for her first date, but the two clicked and ended up sharing drinks at Ford’s house.

The nerves melted away and the two were never seen apart since. After seven years of this devotion, what was the next natural step? Ford proposing to her on Valentine’s Day, 2009. By that point, he had already become a father to Flockhart’s son Liam, born in 2001, who she adopted before meeting Ford. The two wed in on June 15, 2010, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Ford filmed Cowboys & Aliens.

The secret to success

This June marked 13 years of marriage – but their full relationship timeline spans even longer and is a testament to how close these two have remained, despite the typical nature of Hollywood romances. As Ford tells it, the secret is almost painfully simple.

“Don’t talk. Nod your head,” he teased in an interview with Parade.

The two’s relationship has also been a topic of debate because of the age difference between them; Ford is 80 – going to be 81 this July – while Flockhart is 58. But even that isn’t an issue for them. Flockhart is on the record saying, “The truth is, I sometimes feel very much older than Harrison.”

In the end, the two have been right there beside one another for their big successes, cheering people on while also counting their flourishing relationship as one of their jointly biggest triumphs yet. In May, the two were right beside each other at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival celebrating Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Ford said appreciatively, “My life has been enabled by my lovely wife, who has supported my passions and my dreams and I’m grateful.”
