Tom Cruise Ditches King Charles Coronation, Sends Video Message “Pilot To Pilot”

Tom Cruise and the newly-crowned King Charles have a few things in common. On top of their own similarities, Cruise’s Top Gun character has a sense of solidarity with the monarch, and Cruise tapped into that this weekend when he composed a congratulatory video to be played at the king’s coronation on May 6.

Although Charles became king immediately after the September 8 death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, he was coronated over the weekend at Westminster Abbey, the first new British monarch in over seven decades. Cruise was among the many big names scheduled to be there, but instead went to another big event, this one in Florida – but he had a unique compensation tribute at the ready.

Tom Cruise sent King Charles a unique video for his coronation

Originally, Cruise, 60, was slated to appear among other big names, such as Dane Judy Dench, Emma Thompson, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and many more at King Charles’ coronation. Perry and Richie were among the musical artists to close the event with a grand display of fireworks, and although Cruise was absent, he offered words of support in a video that references his latest blockbuster hit.

20,000 guests got to see a clip of Cruise sitting in the cockpit of his very own jet while it appears very much airborne. In addition to the camera, clouds witness Cruise as he vows, “Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time.”

A royal connection

Some celebrities were present thanks to their strong ties to Britain as a whole; some, in addition to those British roots, also happen to have a long history with the royal family. Cruise falls into the latter category – complete with British heritage. Last year, Cruise treated the Prince and Princess of Wales to an early screening of Top Gun: Maverick, which smashed box office records.

But his connection originates three decades back, to when he and his now ex-wife Nicole Kidman met Princess Diana at the London premiere of Far and Away. He also felt an immediate kinship with Prince William after discovering the prince served in the Royal Air Force. As for King Charles, he served in the Royal Navy and RAF, flying both plates and helicopters, something Cruise, an experienced pilot himself, can certainly relate to.
