Bing Crosby, the famous jack of all trades in the entertainment industry was born in 1903. His substantial voice was a warm, welcoming mixture ranging somewhere between bass and baritone. This original sound would win him awards for the best-selling recording artist of the 20th century. The artist sold over one billion records, tapes, CD’s and digital downloads around the world.

Bing was the first known multimedia star. From 1931 to 1954, Crosby was a led the top ranks in record sales, radio ratings, and motion picture grosses. Earlier in his career, his work would (almost as if to his favor) be accompanied by the birth of the microphone. This allowed him to develop his chill, romantic singing style that influenced many of the popular male singers who followed his lead, including Perry Como, Frank Sinatra and more.
Crosby is recognized as the person who had done the most for American G.I. morale during World War II. In 1948, he was recognized as the “most admired man alive”, placing him ahead of his two prime competitors that year, Jackie Robinson and Pope Pius XII.

- When he was alive, Bing Crosby popularly would tell people that his birthday was May 2nd. His birthday is actually May 3rd and the name printed on his birth certificate is in fact, “Harry Lillis Crosby.”
- Gary Crosby, the oldest son of Bing’s would never hold back in talking about Bing’s abusive fatherly ways.
- Bing and his lover, the famous singer Dixie Lee would conceive their sons Gary Crosby, Phillip Crosby & Dennis Crosby (twins) and Lindsay Crosby.

He would pin his large ears back during his early films, until halfway through She Loves Me Not (1934).
- Bing is featured in a 1941 Looney Tunes cartoon entitled, “Hollywood Steps Out” where he can be seen performing onstage for a crowd of miscellaneous celebrities of that time. You his featured debut below beginning at (3:23):
- From the 1940’s to the 1960’s, Bing owned 15% of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. He made a cameo as part-owner of the team in Angels in the Outfield (1951).
- Unfortunately, the children of his original marriage have all passed away. Gary died of lung cancer in 1995. Phillip died of a heart attack in 2004, having defended his father to the end. Dennis and Lindsay both committed suicide.
- Ironically, Bing’s children from his second marriage, including his daughter/ famous actress Mary Crosby, noted him as being gentle and caring father later on in his life.
- He had no next to no sense in fashion, according to Bob Hope.
- He was nicknamed “Bing” after a character named “Bingo” in the comic strip, “Bingville Bugle.”
- In 1998, Bing was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame.
- Bing opened the Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California in 1937. He played ticket collector at the turnstile on opening day. At the start of every racing day, his song “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” is played. The song was specifically written for Del Mar and never sold to any record companies.

Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy is a Christmas song with an added counterpoint performed by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. “Little Drummer Boy” is a Christmas song written in 1957, while the “Peace on Earth” tune and lyrics were added to the song especially for Bowie and Crosby’s recording.
The song was recorded on 11 September for Crosby’s 1977 television special, Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas. The pair exchanged dialogue about what they do for Christmas before singing “Little Drummer Boy” with a new counterpoint with original lyrics written for the special, “Peace on Earth”. Bowie’s appearance has been described as a “surreal” event, undertaken at a time that he was “actively trying to normalise his career” Crosby died on October 14, just over a month after recording the special. In the U.S., the show aired on 30 November 1977 on CBS.
