Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy is a Christmas song with an added counterpoint performed by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. “Little Drummer Boy” is a Christmas song written in 1957, while the “Peace on Earth” tune and lyrics were added to the song especially for Bowie and Crosby’s recording.

The song was recorded on 11 September for Crosby’s 1977 television special, Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas. The pair exchanged dialogue about what they do for Christmas before singing “Little Drummer Boy” with a new counterpoint with original lyrics written for the special, “Peace on Earth”. Bowie’s appearance has been described as a “surreal” event, undertaken at a time that he was “actively trying to normalise his career” Crosby died on October 14, just over a month after recording the special. In the U.S., the show aired on 30 November 1977 on CBS.

“Peace On Earth – Little Drummer Boy Lyrics”

Come they told me
Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
A new born king to see
Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
Our finest gifts we bring
Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
Rum-pum-pum-pum
Rum-pum-pum-pum

Peace on earth, can it be
Years from now, perhaps we’ll see
See the day of glory
See the day when men of good will
Live in peace, live in peace again
1

Peace on earth, can it be

Every child must be made aware
Every child must be made to care
Care enough for his fellow man
To give all the love that he can

I pray my wish will come true
For my child and your child too
He’ll see the day of glory
See the day when men of good will
Live in peace, live in peace again

Peace on earth, can it be
Can it be

“Together”

Frank: Well here we are the 3 of us!
Bing: Man I feel like Coco the Bird Girl up here.
Dean: They said “It couldn’t be topped.”

Frank: Now come on, this is a big moment in my life!
Bing: You’ve had a few.
Frank: This is a really fine occasion for me.
Dean: Yes it’s kinda like the meeting at the Summit!
Bing: Yea I don’t suppose this will be anything bigger than when Elvis gets back & runs into Rickey & Steven!
Frank: You mean to say that this means nothing to you boys!?
Dean: It better mean something!
Bing: Well what I think bones means is that when 3 vagrant minstrels like us get together it’s sort of a fantastic gay hoopla.
Frank: Now don’t make light of this meeting chaps; we’re together; do you realize that!
Dean: (sarcastically) Oh, I’m all choked up!
Frank: (sarcastically) Sure!

Together
All: Where ever we go, whatever we do, we are gonna go through it together!
We may not go far, but sure as a star, where ever we are it’s together!
Frank: Where ever I go, I know that he goes.
Dean: Where ever I go, I know that he goes.
Bing: No fits, no fights, no egos.
Dean: OH!
Bing & Frank: Amigos!

Together!
Too thick or too thin,
All out or all in,
Whether it’s his place or show!

Bing: With you for me.
Dean: & me for you .
Frank: We’ll muddle through whatever we do together where ever we are!

Frank: A close up of me!
Bing: & a close up of me.
All: A close up of all 3 of us together!

Frank: A high note for me!
Bing: A low note for me.
Dean: A soft note for me.
All: Sung together!

Frank: Our singing won’t win us any medallions.
Dean: More likely they’ll smack us with stallions.
Bing: I’d rather face a dozen battalions than Italians!
Dean & Frank: 2! 4! 8!
Bing: Break it up, Together.

When trouble appears,
We will stand all the fears,
Like 3 musketeers in a room!
Touché!
We may leave but we’ll return,

Bing: Like Maxine,
Dean: Patty!
Frank: & Lavern!
All: Together where ever we go!

Frank: When I feel a pain,
Dean: & I feel a pain,
Bing: I will take Novocain!
All: OUCH! Together!

Bing: If my stocks should fail.
Frank: Bite your tongue!
All: We will all go to jail, but together!
Bing: As friends we will share life’s greatest chances…
Dean & Frank: (Hmmm).
Bing: What have I got here? The Everly Brothers? The setbacks as well as the advances.
Dean & Frank: (Boo & mmm.)
And will we share each other’s romances?
Bing: Well I’ve given all my old telephone numbers to Charley Weaver.
Dean & Frank: Finances?
Bing: My book maker will love your business.
Frank: OUCH!

Too thin or too thick,
To each we will stick.
My Timex will tick and will glow!
It’s shaperol like oompapa
Dean: Like Eva!
Bing: Magna!
Frank: And ZsaZsa!

Together where ever we go!
We’ll dance together like Becker[?] Clips to clips,
Dance like Elvis like hips to hips,
Together where ever we go! ({Repeat 3x)

Bing: (to Dean) You’re peeking!
Dean: (to Bing) I know!
Bing: (to Frank) Oh! I mean you’re peeking!
