“MOVIES TODAY”

  • 1953 – Disney’s 14th animated film, Peter Pan (based on James M. Barrie’s 1904 story) opens at the Roxy Theatre in New York City. The film features the voices of Bobby Driscoll (as the boy who won’t grow up) and Kathryn Beaumont (as Wendy Darling). This will be the final Disney animated feature released through RKO, as Walt Disney will establish his own distribution company, Buena Vista Distribution, by the end of 1953.
  • 1964 – The live-action Disney feature The Misadventures of Merlin Jones – starring Tommy Kirk, Annette Funicello, Leon Ames and Dal McKennon – premieres in St. Louis, Missouri. Kirk plays college student Merlin who experiments with mind-reading and hypnotism … which leads to run-ins with Judge Holmsby (played by Ames).
  • 1964 – Man in the Middle (original title) a CinemaScope film, starring Robert Mitchum and directed by Guy Hamilton. The movie, set in World War II India, tells the story of the murder trial of an American Army officer who killed a British soldier.
  • 1976 – The Disney live-action comedy No Deposit, No Return (starring David Niven, Darren McGavin and Don Knotts) is released. Two would-be safe-crackers help fake the kidnapping of two bored grandchildren (played by Kim Richards and Brad Savage) of a millionaire.
  • 1982 – The Disney live-action film Night Crossing starring John Hurt and Beau Bridges is released. It is based on the true story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families, who on September 16, 1979 escaped from East Germany to West Germany in a homemade hot air balloon
  • 1982 – Butterfly –  A  film directed by Matt Cimber, based on the 1947 novel The Butterfly by James M. Cain. The starring cast includes Stacy Keach, Pia Zadora, Lois Nettleton, Ed McMahon, and Orson Welles.
  • 1988 – She’s Having a Baby  – An American romantic comedy film directed by John Hughes..
  • 1988 – The Unbearable Lightness of Being –  In 1968, a Czech doctor with an active sex life meets a woman who wants monogamy, and then the Soviet invasion further disrupts their lives.
  • 1993 – Loaded Weapon 1 – . A “Lethal Weapon” style cop team tries to find and stop the fiends before they can dope the nation by distributing their wares via the “Wilderness Girls” cookie drive.  Loaded Weapon 1 opened No. 1 at the box office and grossed almost $28 million domestically in total.
  • 1993  –  Sommersby  –  It is a romantic drama film directed by Jon Amiel and starring Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, Bill Pullman and James Earl Jones. Set in the Reconstruction period following the U.S. Civil War, the story is adapted from the historical account of 16th century French peasant Martin Guerre
  • 1993 – The Vanishing –  a thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Nancy Travis. It is an American remake of a 1988 Franco-Dutch film also called The Vanishing, and also directed by George Sluizer. The boyfriend of an abducted woman never gives up the search as the abductor looks on.
  • 1999 – Payback – . An American Neo Noir crime film written and directed by Brian Helgeland in his directorial debut, and starring Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry, Maria Bello and David Paymer.

“MUSIC TODAY”

  • 1955 –  New York City’s WNEW-AM announces the winners of its annual music popularity poll: Perry Como (Male Singer), Patti Page (Female Singer), the Crew-Cuts (Vocal Group), and Ray Anthony (Orchestra).
  • 1957 –  5,000 fans greeted  Bill Haley when he arrived from New York on the liner Queen Elizabeth at Southampton, for his debut UK concert tour. Haley was the first American rock artist to tour the UK.
  • 1966 –  Petula Clark had her second No.1 in the US singles chart with ‘My Love’, making her the first British female to have two US No.1 hits. ‘My Love’ became a No. 4 in the UK.
  • 1966 –  SSgt Barry Sadler’s “The Ballad of the Green Berets” enters the pop charts
  • 1966 –  The Marketts’ “Batman Theme” enters the pop charts
  • 1966 – Frank Sinatra moved to #1 on the Easy Listening chart with the great song “It Was A Very Good Year”.
  • 1970 –  David Bowie recorded four songs at the BBC Paris Cinema, London, for the  John Peel Sunday Concert radio show. This was guitarists  Mick Ronson’s first appearance with Bowie who went on to work with Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars.
  • 1972 –  Neil Young released, “Heart Of Gold”
  • 1972 –  “Gee, I hope it ain’t twins again”: Loretta Lynn has a #1 country single in Billboard with “One’s On The Way”
  • 1972 –  Paul Simon released his first new song without Art Garfunkel, ‘Mother and Child Reunion’, which peaked at No.4 in the US. Simon got the idea for the song’s title from a chicken-and-egg dish called Mother and Child Reunion that he saw on a Chinese restaurant’s menu.
  • 1972 – Don McLean had the #1 album for the third straight week with American Pie, holding off The Concert for Bangla Desh by George Harrison.
  • 1972 – “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green, the #1 R&B Song of the 1970’s*, remained #1 for a fifth week.
  • 1973 – Vicki Lawrence released her landmark single “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia”.
  • 1977 – Stevie Wonder had the top R&B song for a fourth week with “I Wish”.
  • 1977 – Barbra Streisand led the way on the Adult chart for a fourth week with “Evergreen”.
  • 1977 – Mary MacGregor’s “Torn Between Two Lovers” hits #1
  • 1977 – The Eagles returned to #1 on the Album chart with Hotel California.
  • 1979 – The Pointer Sisters’ “Fire” is certified gold
  • 1983 – Def Leppard’s album ‘Pyromania’, started a 92 week run on the US charts, it never reached No.1 but sold over 6 million copies in the US alone.
  • 1983 – Toto went to No.1 on the US singles with ‘Africa’; a No.3 hit in the UK.
  • 1983 – DeBarge first appeared on the chart with their first hit–“I Like It”.
  • 1983 – Patti Austin and James Ingram combined for the #1 Adult Contemporary song for a third week with “Baby, Come To Me”.
  • 1986 – Prince released the song “Kiss.”
  • 1994 – “Cry for You” by Jodeci was the #1 R&B song for a fourth week.”.
  • 1994 – John Michael Montgomery’s “I Swear” begins a four-week stay at #1 on the Billboard country singles chart .
  • 1994 – The trio of Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams and Sting remained at #1 for a third week with “All For Love”.
  • 1994 – Mariah Carey remained at #1 on the Album chart for a sixth week with Music Box.

“TV/RADIO TODAY”

  • 1960 – The TV series Walt Disney Presents airs the episode “Two Happy Amigos.”
  • 1961 – Walt Disney Presents airs “Texas John Slaughter: A Holster Full of Law,” the 15th episode of the western mini-series starring Tom Tryon.
  • 1979  – Sears Radio Theater premieres on CBS
  • 1987 – This day’s issue of Walt Disney World Eyes & Ears (“Prepared By And For The Walt Disney World Cast”) announces that the 6th annual Village Wine Festival will be held at the Conference Center February 5-8.
  • 2000 – Mickey Mouse Works airs on ABC-TV with the shorts “Donald’s Dynamite: Magic Act,” “Survival of the Woodchucks,” “Mickey’s Rival Returns,” and “Mickey and the Seagull.”
  • 2000 – The Disney Channel Original Movie The Color of Friendship, based on a true story about the friendship between two girls from different worlds who learn to overcome their differences, debuts. (It will earn an Emmy Award.)

“OTHER IMPORTANT EVENTS…”

  • 1971 – Apollo 14 commander Alan B. Shepard Jr. became the fifth human to walk on the moon with astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell .
  • 1972 – Bob Douglas became the first black man elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA.
  • 1998 – Tim Kelly (Slaughter) died after a being injured in an auto accident in Arizona at the age of 34.
  • 1991 – Good Time Jazz Records releases Firehouse Five Plus Two: At Disneyland – a live recording taken of the group’s performances at The Golden Horseshoe back in July 1962.
  •   1992 – Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is nominated for six  Academy Awards. Among the nominations is one for Best  Picture. It is the first time in the history of the Motion Picture Academy  that an animated feature is nominated in this category. Winners were announced March 30, 1992
  • 1998 – Elton John and Stevie Wonder perform at the White House for US President Bill Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
  • 1999 – Mike Tyson was sentenced to a year in jail for assaulting two people after a car accident on August 31, 1998. Tyson was also fined $5,000, had to serve 2 years of probation, and had to perform 200 hours of community service upon release.
  • 2001 – Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman announced their separation.
