Bloodsuckers of the night, the dark ghouls of nocturnal hunger, Beware the Vampire! some scholars believe the legend of the creature from beyond the grave, feasting on the blood of the living goes back even to prehistoric times. These beliefs lead to mass hysteria in more than one era, even leading such paranoia of the monsters, it leads people to build massive walls around cemeteries and even going so far as to install metal cages over tombs to prevent the freedom of the undead predator. Today in our (slightly) more enlightened era, we laugh at these foibles of our ancestors, their fear and chagrin overshadow in the night, nevertheless, the myth is a powerful one and has inspired more than its fair share of cinema, so without further ado, now presenting our Best Vampire Movies!   Nosferatu (1922) This silent film is the original vampire movie list in this genre of terror. The story of a German real estate agent looking to sell some property to Count Orlok, a nocturnal recluse, it’s like an episode of HGTV’s House Hunters International gone horrible awry, making it one of the best vampire movies.   The Lost Boys (1987) Two brothers move to a small beach town with their single mom only to find out that their new locale is riddled with tough-guy bikers and vampires. The older brother gets swept up in the glamor of teenage vampirism, while the younger brother becomes involved in the movement to vanquish these bloodsucking beasts. Kiefer Sutherland looks fine as hell in his role as the leader of the vampire pack.   Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992) Before the hit television show by the same name, Buffy was kicking ass on the big screen in one of the best vampire movies. Based on a popular comic book series, this movie plays on the gender bias towards attractive young girls to show that even cheerleaders can be shadowy figures of supernatural justice. Kristy Swanson makes slaying vampires look super cute.   Interview With a Vampire (1994) Ladies were swooning over the star power of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, the supreme 90s heartthrobs, joining forces in this spooky film. They play the roles of Louis and Lestat, two sexy vampire bachelors whose afterlives become intertwined. Things get even more interesting when Brad and Tom take a young Kirsten Dunst under their wing in a macabre My Two Dads sort of arrangement.   Let The Right One In (2008) This Swedish film follows the story of a bullied boy, Oskar, and his friendship with a mysterious young girl who lives in his apartment complex. When he learns that his new pal is actually an ancient vampire, Oskar fears for his safety. If subtitles aren’t your thing, the 2010 Hollywood remake called Let Me In offers an Americanized version of this bittersweet tale.   Dracula (1992) Of all the film adaptations made from Bram Stoker’s classic novel, this one directed by Francis Ford Coppola is widely revered as the most authentic. Winona Ryder stars as the object of Dracula’s affection with Keanu Reeves playing the gnarly lawyer that unwittingly puts in fiance in harm’s way.   From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) Putting a new spin on the vampire movie genre, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino bring the undead into the world of shoot-em-up crime drama. When two bank robbers and their hostages stop in at a Mexican strip club, they get more than they bargained for in this cult classic, truly one of the best vampire movies!.   Fright Night (1985) When a teenager Charley Brewster sees his new neighbors acting suspiciously, he realizes they may be vampires and/or serial killers that are responsible for a string of grisly murders. Without the support of his family or the police, who think he has an overactive imagination, Charley has to prove his theory and stop the vampires from striking again.   Salem’s Lot (1979) This made for television movie is based on a Stephen King novel and (SURPRISE!) takes place in Maine. When a novelist returns to his hometown of Salem’s Lot, he finds it to be even creepier than when he left. The Marsten House, an abandoned mansion that sits upon a hill overlooking the town, becomes his focus as he tries to unravel the mystery.   The Hunger (1983) Miriam is a sultry vampire seductress who lures victims into her boudoir and drains them of their youth so that she may preserve her own. David Bowie and Susan Sarandon star as two of Miriam’s pawns in this scintillating thriller.
