Celluloid Days Podcast – Werewolf (1996) A Riffing Review!

Adriana Stastny
Werewolf (1996)

In the opinion of Celluloid Days, one of the best episodes ever on Mystery Science Theater 3000 was the 1996 film, Werewolf. It was featured on MST3k only two short years after it was released. And I think it is one of the most highly-rated shows by fans of the show.

In this episode, with the help of Nancy Frye, I look at the film some call Wuhrwif, both the original and the riffed version. It is the story of the discovery of a werewolf skeleton in the Arizona desert and how a simple scratch from one of the bones can turn humans into killing beasts!

The film is about a writer named Paul returning to his home in suburban Flagstaff. What kind of a writer is he, we don’t know. For a group of scientists who uncovered the skeletal remains of what appears to be a werewolf, he’s their last hope. Last hope for what, we don’t know! After being scratched by the werewolf skull, the young man begins to change into something hideous. And all this is complicated by a young female archaeologist named Natalie who has fallen in love with him.

Joe Estevez
Werewolf (1996)

Cast member and episode director Kevin Murphy said to an audience in New York, “Werewolf is a gift from God.”

There is so much of this film that is just plain strange. The biggest questions are, did Adriana Stastny, who is credited as Adrianna Miles, the actress who played Natalie, speak English at all? And what is the deal with Jorge Rivero, who played Yuri, constantly changing hair! And why is Joe Estevez in the film?

Anyway, for more on this weird monster movie, listen to the podcast!
