Lina Medina, the world's youngest mother

Year 1940, Peruvian five-year-old Lina Medina, accompanied by her 11-month-old-son Gerardo, and Doctor Lozada who attended her son's birth, taken in Lima's hospital.

Lina Medina was born on September 27, 1933 in a small village in Paurange.

Lina Medina's parents thought that their 5-year-old daughter has a huge abdominal tumor. Their village shamans could find no cure for it so her mother carried her to the hospital asking for help for their daughter's condition.

After Doctor Lozada examined Lina's condition, he was surprised to find out that the child was eight months pregnant, making her the world's youngest mother. A month
and a half later, on Mother's Day, May 14, 1939, Lina Medina gave birth to a boy by a caesarean section due to her small pelvis. Her son weighed 2.7 kg (6 lb) at birth and was named Gerardo after her doctor.

Doctor Lozada conducted a detailed examination on Lina Medina's early pregnancy. The girl had begun menstruating at the age of 8 months, developed breasts and pubic hair at the age of four years old and her bone hardening a bit advanced.

There was no evidence of Lina Medina's pregnancy. The girl herself did not reveal the father of her child or the circumstances of her impregnation.

Medina's son Gerardo grew up believing that Lina was her sister. He found out that Lina was in fact his mother when he was 10 years old.

Gerardo grew up healthy but died in 1979 at the age of 40 of a disease of the bone marrow.
