7 Signs It’s Time To Repipe Your Home

Plumbing is a challenging aspect of home repair that is most often best left to the professionals. With potentially high costs associated with replacing and repiping, knowing when to and when not to Repipe your home is critical. With that in mind, let’s review some of the signs that it’s time to repipe your home.

The Water Does Not Smell Right

Poor tasting or smelling water means that your pipes might be in the process of deteriorating. For the smell to get worse, there has to be either one large problem or many smaller problems. Either way, it’s time to repipe.

Pipes are Making Noises

A good way to tell if your pipes need to be replaced is to listen to the noises they make. Banging and creaking noises are common when pipes are getting older and require replacement. Be aware that these are noises that go beyond the ambient house noises we take for granted.

Temperature is Hard to Change

Are you having problems changing the water temperature? Does an even amount of change on a handle lead to a disproportionate change in the temperature of the water? When temperature is either hard to change or reacts wildly, the pipes may need to be replaced.

Corrosion On Pipes

This is something you can test for yourself by looking at the condition of your pipes. If they look like they are suffering from corrosion and there are noticeable signs of rust, then it’s time to replace.

Leaky Pipes

Leaky pipes can happen for a number of reasons. If the issue is localized to one area, then it may just be that pipe or joint segment. However, if Leaky Pipes are a problem all over and there are issues with things like corrosion, water tasting bad, or discoloration, then now is the time to repipe.

Water Discoloration

The color of your water can tell you a lot about the condition of your pipes. For example, it’s not uncommon for pipes to turn red when rust is an issue and corrosion is occurring. Turn on your water. Does it start discolored and then gradually become clear? This means there is damage or corrosion on the interior of your pipe and it is time to replace.

Water Pressure Issues

What is the water pressure like when you turn on a faucet or use the shower? Does it last or does it decrease over time? Is it lower than you remember? If this is the case, then you have an issue with your pipes and it’s time to replace them.
