Poolside Slips & Injuries: How to Prevent It

The Pool area is a fun and relaxing place. However, the pool deck can get pretty dangerous. Slipping or falling on a wet pool deck can cause injuries. While it is easy to warn family and friends, it won’t hurt to be more cautious by making the pool area a lot safer. Here are some things you can do to enhance safety in and around the pool.

Slip-resistant Pool Deck Texture Coatings

One of the best things homeowners can do to make sure all walking surfaces on a pool area are safe is by adding a slip-resistant material. A spray knock down finish is an acrylic concrete coating sprayed on the concrete pool deck and then troweled to a textured finish. A spray-down concrete resurfacing service is actually quite economical, stunning, and long-lasting.

Working Drainage System

A drainage system is an important part of a pool area. Before the pool area was even built, there should have already been a drainage plan. Also, check the pool deck for any puddles. If water gathers in one area with no evident escape route, then that area right there will be a slip hazard. If there is no immediate fix to this, put some non-skid tape on that area to increase traction despite the presence of water.

Regular Pool Deck Cleaning

Clean the deck regularly especially if puddling is frequent. Standing water is an ideal breeding ground for algae and mold. It is important to brush those areas clean regularly to keep them from getting all slimy.

Handrailing & Fences

These are essential on pool decks where a lot of elderly people and small children are present. It gives them something to grip and hold on to when they take an awkward step on wet areas. Install some on the pool deck and also within the pool. These are also great for preventing drowning.

Remove Tripping Hazards

Clear the deck of anything that could trip someone. These could be toys, stones, leaves, and other debris. If you have pool toys and swim rings, make sure to have a dedicated place for it, away from where people often walk.

Wear Slip-Resistant Footwear

There are flip-flops and sandals with strong grip soles. These maintain their grip no matter how wet or soaked a pool deck is. They could be expensive but investing in a pair will definitely save you from more costly injuries.
