The Lowest Thieves

We’ve all heard tales of the benevolent Thief. Think Robin Hood who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Think Jean Valjean who steals a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s children. The noble thief who gives to those in need is an idealized thief, but most Thieves have less pure intentions, and the things they steal and from whom they steal are reflective of humanity’s most base nature.

The following thieves are those who have committed the lowest of the low:

  • In Rotterdam, NY, 8-year-old Safyre Terry suffered the tragedy of losing her entire family in an arson fire and lives with severe burns from the fire. For Christmas, the 8-year-old requested cards from strangers, and the public responded overwhelmingly to provide her with more than a million cards. Unable to open all of these cards herself, Terry had dozens of volunteers to help her. One of these volunteers was 41-year-old Kimberly Bradford who has now been arraigned for stealing from those cards.
  • In two seemingly unrelated cases, the ashes of loved ones were stolen during home burglaries. In San Francisco, a woman’s home was broken into between 10:15 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. The greatest loss among many valuables was a tear-shaped urn containing the woman’s mother’s ashes. In a similarly despicable thievery in London, a woman returned from a weekend away to find a small white casket amongst jewelry missing. The woman suspects the thieves may have thought the box full of jewelry and not her 18-month-old daughter’s ashes.

While we don’t know for certain the situations of the above thieves, we know the result of their crimes; the emotional trauma suffered by their victims. In a world like ours, where people often think of themselves first, it’s important to protect yourself against these kind of individuals.
