Do You Tip a Cleaning Service?

Tipping a Cleaning service is a rather new concept. It used to be that if you felt a particular worker did an outstanding job and you wanted to show your appreciation, you could slip the worker a tip. Tipping was not required, and in most instances, not expected. However, in today’s world of services, there is an expectation of tips, almost to the point of thinking a tip should be given even if a job was performed well, but not necessarily exceptionally well. Unfortunately, many service companies, including cleaning services, pay only minimum wage, so the workers really depend on tips to help pay their bills.

Another consideration in today’s handling of tips is that most cleaning companies do not allow their workers to receive personalized or individual tips. A tip can be added to what the customer pays for the cleaning service, and the cleaning service is then to pass the tip along to the worker. Hopefully, most cleaning companies will see their workers receive the tips intended for them. Part of the reason companies require tips to go through management is so the IRS can claim their share during tax season. The usual amount expected for a tip is 20% of the total cost though there is no hard and fast rule for a specific amount.

People wonder if they should always tip a job well done or not or if tipping should be contingent on work exceptionally done. From the worker’s standpoint, they need the tips, but if a job is poorly done, tipping will only encourage continued poor work. Probably the best way to handle a situation where you feel you really don’t want to tip is to let the cleaning service manager know the reason or reasons you are choosing not to tip. A well-run cleaning company will sit down with the worker who has done their job poorly and nicely but firmly explain why there was no tip. Sometimes it is a good idea to have the worker return to the job done poorly and redo it to the customer’s satisfaction.
