The stain hues available at Kloter Farms are manifold and often influenced by the latest home décor trends. Take grey, for example – this calm neutral has become increasingly popular in the interior design world and can now be used as a furniture stain. This allows you to see the beautiful grain of the wood through the richness of the grey stain of your choice.

In many cases, you can do both! Incorporating both a stain and paint into your furniture customization project allows you to select a color that really “pops” while still embracing the natural beauty of the wood. Many homeowners go this route when choosing a dining table or kitchen island with seating. For example, you might consider painting the base or legs of your table or island, while staining the top for a natural wood look.

Many of the woodshops that we partner with offer different levels of distressing. For example, we provide three different distressing options for our own furniture (with the exception of our pine pieces) to keep things simple: light, medium, and heavy. Just as the descriptions suggest, each level has different degrees of distress and burnishing.

Again, it’s important to note that while some woodshops offer different levels of distressing, others may not. It is our experience that when the distressing of a piece is left up to the interpretation of the artisan crafting it, the final product is almost always a beautiful and inspired work of art.

Pine: Distress vs. Antiquing

A question that we often receive from customers in our stores and via our website is, “What is the difference in the finish options for distressed pine furniture vs. antiqued pine furniture?”

The two photos below are a great example of this. While the colors themselves may differ, the general concept holds true across the different levels of distressing.

Note that the black 32-inch corner hutch in antiqued pine has a heavy amount of “rub-through” and burnishing around the doors, edges, and knobs. Conversely, the white 18-inch corner hutch in distressed pine shows only mild distressing on the knob and at the edges.
