So you’ve chosen a gorgeous new custom Furniture Collection, and the question arises:

“I wonder what Colors and Finish Options are available for my new custom Furniture”?

If you have chosen a custom or made-to-order dining or bedroom collection, or even that special accent table or kitchen island, the short answer is pretty much anything.  While that is very true, we have delved into some of the various options that are available.

Some of the most common finish options that we offer here at Kloter Farms (but not limited to), are:

• Stain
• Paint
• Paint & Stain Combinations
• Distressing
• Antiquing

Now keep in mind that not all options are available for all furniture pieces out there since different shops may have their own techniques and finish options.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the options.

1. Stain

The most common way to finish a piece of fine furniture is by using a stain.  Stains come in many different shades and can sometimes be custom blended to match an existing piece of furniture.

With the hues of stains ever-changing, the colors are now reaching new levels.  The shades of grey that have become increasingly popular are possible now in stains which means that you can see the beautiful grain of the wood through the richness of the grey color.

Deep rich charcoal and almost black stains are available also as well as many other tones and colors.

A trend that we see continuing in popularity is what we call “stain-on-stain combination“.  This is when we stain one part of a piece of furniture in one color and accent another portion in a different color for a really nice contrast.

2. Paint

My Way. My Style.  That’s our motto here at Kloter Farms.  We believe that our customers should have the option to ‘Turn on the Color!’ if they wish.  We love to see customers come in and use their creativity to create their one-of-a-kind collection.

Or for simplicity’s sake, choose a single color for a dramatic effect.

When it comes to paint colors, if Sherwin Williams has it, we have it.  The options are endless.

3. Paint & Stain Combination

Unsure whether you want to use a paint or stain, why not do both?  This option allows you to choose a color that really ‘pops’ and yet embrace the natural beauty of the wood at the same time.

4. Distressing

One of the huge benefits of ordering custom-made furniture is the ability to embrace look of an antique and yet capitalizing on the advantages of modern technology and construction.  Through different techniques the warm look of age can be brought to a brand new piece of furniture.

Many of the shops that we use offer different levels of distressing.  On our furniture (with exception of our pine pieces) we pretty much offer three different levels to keep things simple; light, medium, & heavy.

Just as the descriptions suggest, the levels of distressing have varying degrees of distress and burnishing.  The pictures below show a hutch door from our Keystone Collection illustrating the varying degrees of distressing that they offer.

Like we mentioned above, some shops offer different levels of distressing and others may not.  We have found that while the distressing is left up to the interpretation of the artisan crafting the piece, it always comes out as a beautiful work of art.

Pine- Distress vs. Antiquing

A question that we often get from customers coming into the store or visiting our website is “what is the difference in the finish options for the distressed pine furniture vs. the antiqued pine furniture”?

The two photos below fairly plainly show the difference.  While the colors are different, the concept holds true for the different levels of distressing.

*Notice on the black 32″ Corner Hutch the heavy amount of “rub-through” and burnishing around the doors, edges, and the knob while the white 18″ Corner Hutch shows only mild distressing on the knob and edges.

Another illustration below shows one shop’s variation on the finish options available for painted pieces.  Again not all shops offer all options.  Some offer only one option or the other.
