What is a saltwater generator?
There are several different methods you can use to sanitize the water in your swimming pool. An increasingly popular option is the use of a saltwater generator. A saltwater generator will covert the dissolved salt in the pool water into chlorine. Using a saltwater generator will have two major benefits over using traditional chlorine in your pool; easier maintenance and softer smoother water. The maintenance is easier because you will no longer have to measure or add any chlorine to the pool water. The water in a saltwater pool with a saltwater generator is soft with no taste of salt or resemblance to the ocean. The amount of salt in a saltwater pool is about 3500 ppm (parts per million) which is very close to the amount of salt in our eyes and therefore not irritating to the eyes or the skin.
Saltwater should only be used on pools that are warranted for saltwater use such as our Saltwater 5000, Saltwater 8000, or Saltwater LX pool models. Saltwater is very easy to maintain but can be corrosive to some pool components so you would need a pool that is specifically made for it.
Top 3 Saltwater Generators
Here are the best quality and most popular saltwater generators available on the market today.
Solaxx Saltron Retro Saltwater Chlorine Generator SALRET20A
The Solaxx Saltron Retro is an economical and effective way to convert the dissolved salt in the pool water into chlorine. This drop-in unit hangs over the pool wall and will go directly into the pool water and include a low voltage power supply. An advantage to the Drop In units is the ease of installation on new or existing pools as there is no plumbing required. They also carry a lower price than Return Jet or Hard Plumbing systems. The Solaxx Saltron Retro includes a 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty and is made in the U.S.A.
This self-contained purification system utilizes a natural process to generate pure chlorine. The electrolytic process uses a very low concentration of salt (less then a teaspoon per gallon) and generates free chlorine.
Solaxx Saltron Retro Jet RJ Saltwater Chlorine Generator
The Solaxx Saltron Retro Jet RJ is an enhanced saltwater system that simply connects to the water jet return fitting (on the outside of the pool) and coverts the dissolved salt in the pool water into chlorine. This return jet saltwater system includes easy-to-read control panels that accurately calculate salt levels providing soft, silky water. Most customers prefer the sleeker design of the Return Jet Saltwater Systems rather than the units that hang inside the actual pool water. This way the people swimming in your pool cannot accidentally touch or bump into the unit. The Solaxx Saltron Retro Jet RJ includes a 1 Year Manufacturer’s Warranty and is made in the U.S.A.
Specifically made for Above Ground Swimming Pools, The Solaxx Retro Jet system produces a pure, elemental form of chlorine by electrolysis of salt added to the pool water. After the salt is converted to chlorine and bacteria has been killed, the chlorine reverts back to salt and this process is ongoing.
Solaxx Saltron Reliant Saltwater Chlorine Generator Up To 30,000 Gallons
The Solaxx Saltron Reliant connects to the return line of the pool with PVC pipe or flexible PVC pipe, producing chlorine through the dissolved salt in the pool water. This unit includes a flow switch and control box that features easy push button icons with LED indicators. The flow switch allows you to install the saltwater system in line with your filter system. The Solaxx Saltron Reliant can be installed vertically or horizontally which is great for semi-inground installation. It does not have to be mounted to the return jet like the RJ models. The Solaxx Saltron Reliant includes the longest manufacturer warranty for the saltwater generators; 3 years as opposed to 1 like most other units. The Reliant is made in the U.S.A.
The Reliant system produces a pure, elemental form of chlorine by electrolysis of salt added to the pool water. After the salt is converted to chlorine and bacteria has been killed, the chlorine reverts back to salt and this process is ongoing. The salt concentration is very low (less than a human tear) and the water feels soft, silky and sparkling clean!
