Musty Washing Machine smell.

You could cringe just reading it. Damp Washing machines are prone to mold growth, mildew and grime. We use washing machines to clean our linens almost every day, but how often do we clean the washing machine itself? If your answer is “never,” you’re not alone.

The average American family washes almost 400 loads of laundry each year. Let’s bump that number up a bit and commit to cleaning our washing machines every other month. Here’s an easy step-by-step process on how to effectively clean your washing machine:

Step One: Clean the Basin with Chlorine Bleach

• Start the washing machine using hot water at the highest level  (do NOT add detergent or clothes.)

• Add a quart of chlorine bleach, start the washing cycle for roughly 15 seconds to allow it to agitate, then stop the cycle and allow it to sit for one hour.
• After it has sat for one hour, resume the washing machine and allow it to finish the cycle. Select a setting  with an extra rinse cycle if available.

Step Two: Clean the Basin with Vinegar

• Repeat step one only this time use a quart of vinegar.

Top Loader:

During the hour wait during  the vinegar cycle, use the time to clean the top of the washing machine that the water doesn’t touch by hand. Use a sponge or rag, dipped in vinegar water and scrub the surfaces.

Front Loader:

After step  two, clean the rubber seal on the door. This area is prone to mold growth since water can get trapped between the seal and the machine.

Step Three: Clean out the Nooks and Crannies

• Use a cotton swab dipped in vinegar water to clean the detailed nooks and crannies. An old toothbrush can also be used to get into hard to reach places.
• Clean the soap dispenser by wiping it down with a vinegar water solution. If the dispenser is removable, wash it in the dishwasher.
